If you consider that someone on benefits, including disability benefits will find themselves in most cases with more disposable income than the average family, yet no travel cost to go to work, is it really so unreasonable to expect them to pay for the travel to receive healthcare?

    I wish that was true!

Would it be reasonable to claim £4.75 to buy a meal for being away from home for more than 5 hours?

How do you manage to eat on the days when your not visiting a hospital. How do you manage to eat if you go for a day out . I dont think £4.75 is unreasonable to claim but i do think your unreasonabe to claim it:mad: Am i being unreasonable to say that.

Underneath I totally agree with you, though even on £650 a week in benefits it is only half of what I was earning net in 1989/95!!!

My argument was and still is, although I have seen sense and do what others are doing now, that if you receive DLA specifically because you have difficulties in getting about and therefore your costs are greater, you should use that money to get to and from hospital appointments. Not claim the costs back as most do including myself now!!

But it is in many cases!! The worst being people over the age of 65, claiming Pension Credit and other disability benefits.

Just with the very basic Attendance Allowance award each, a couple will get a minimum of £503.20 a week and that is before any Council Tax Benefit (100%) and Housing Benefit (100%)

The overall weekly figure could actually amount to over £658.00 a week!!!

Although it will affect me considerably, more should be made of this 'abuse' of the benefit system instead of attacking young people with children. Isn't it about time the Daily Mail cottoned on to this and made everybody aware of just what is going on. I have written to the editor last week, but as yet, nothing has been said. No wonder the 'grey voters' keep quiet, they are the ones that are bleeding this country dry!!

You wrote to the Daily Mail about it even though you are one of the people they will vilify?

You're such a BS spouter rotoguys, and one of the biggest trolls on here, what pleasure do you get from constantly telling your lies

Firstly I am not a 'troll' as you put it.

As for telling lies, why don't you prove that I am wrong then?

    OK you want the example.

    AA x 2 £103.70
    Basic Guaranteed Pension Credit £217.90
Disability Premium for a couple £116.40
    Carers Premium x 2 £65.20

Add that lot up and you come to £503.20 Minimum Guaranteed Income per week.

I do not have to prove myself - the figures speak for themselves.

I don't tell lies - I tell it as it is warts & all. Maybe you don't like to hear the truth.

Please, please back up your statement that I constantly tell lies!!

Yes I did and gave them details of what I am allowed to claim!!

Seeing you have brought that subject up, my question on this site was 'why do people on this site vilify benefit claimants?' I mentioned nothing about the Daily Mail (which in my opinion is a very good newspaper).

I still don't know why as it has nothing to do with anybody else what they do really.

My argument was and still is that people over 60 are the worst in abusing the benefit system. No way that we should (we are both over 60) be given that level of benefits - it is obscene!!

For a couple to receive a minimum of £500 a week (excluding housing and council tax benefits) is crazy, when a similar couple with a couple of kids don't get anywhere near that level.

Of course I stand to lose a lot of money if changes are made as my benefit level on Pension Credit is £650 a week!!

But, and I seriously mean this, if this excess could be taken from the likes of us and many more 'wealthy' pensioners and it be given to those that truly need it - the young couple with a couple of kids working for NMW, I would be over the moon!!!

The sooner the public wake up to this scandal the better it will be for the youngsters in this country. The over 60's are the greediest of the lot and yes I am one of them, but not very happy about it.

I hope you explained to them how you have been 'forced' to claim benefits.

    Yes in fact I did!!

How I was made to feel that I was 'letting the side down'.
How Social Services insisted that the claim be made saying that 30% of eligible claimants were not claiming and should do.
Being made to feel that I was letting myself down along with my wife by not claiming!

I only asked a question, the next thing I knew a form was thrust in front of me to sign!

Besides which many others on this site have also had similar experiences.
