Do I need to buy a plusnet router

I have just signed up to plusnet and didnt select the £4.99 router. I have a router from virgin which is a NETGEAR ADSL2+ model DG834G.
How do i know if it is compatable.
If it is locked to my previous broadband providers i.e virgin can it be unlocked.
would it be easier to buy my own router then I am not locked to plusnet or any other broadband provider.

Sorry for all questions but just want to make sure first.

thanks

  • Some of the routers supplied by Virgin Media were locked so that you could only make basic changes, just like the ones Sky supply. However, some of the Netgears were not locked.

If you still have the router connected, try logging into it from your browser.

Type 192.168.1.0 into your browser, when the login box appears for the User enter - Admin and for the password enter - password, this should get you into the main screen, unless you changed your password at some time. Once in there you should be able to see where your Virginmedia username has already been entered.

I assume that you were on Virgin National, not VM cable, as that is an ADSL modem/router, not a cable router.
You can use any ADSL router you like on Plusnet.

Yes we are a new build house so cable isnt an option and I dont think they will bother putting cable in now. i do find that a lot of broadband packages dont cover us but plusnet seems ok for our case.

It might be worthwhile checking for updated firmware and reflashing the router see http://support.netgear.com/app/products/family/a_id/1288/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzI4MTMxNjIzL3NpZC9yM1RhTERQaw%3D%3D

I spoke too soon, funny when I spoke to virgin yesterday they said fine no problems just give us a ring and we will give u a MAC code. Then when I phoned today I got snotty comments that I was leaving contract early so I asked what the penelty was. After some some discussion the guy said £5 for the MAC code but it would cost a further £24 if the switch didnt happen correctly, does this sound normal

They are not allowed to charge for a MAC. Some may get round this by charging an administration fee rather than a charge for the code itself.

I haven't come across the fee if the transfer doesn't happen? If the MAC is unused your service with Virgin should be unaffected!

With regards to the router question, you would be able to use the Virgin router you have but most ISPs will only be able to support routers they actually provide you with, so that's something to bear in mind.
