Is there such a thing as a table top smoke alarm?

I suspect not, simply due to the fact smoke rises so alarms are ceiling based but just wondered if there was anything on the market that could sit on a bedside table.

Why does it need to go on a bedside table? Above the bed would be more effective because, as you already said, smoke rises.0

It would be psychological prop for someone who is affected by fears/phobias. There are already smoke alarms installed in the house, this was just as an extra 'comfort' for the person.Herman - MP for all!

As they emit radiation, the last place it wants to be is on a table next to the bed.Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure - MSE ForumTeam0

They emit alpha radiation and a tiny amount of gamma. Alpha radiation is stopped by tissue paper or a few centimetres of air. It's only a problem if you are in the habit of swallowing your fire alarms.0 -

Yes, it's a smoke alarm placed on a table top instead of being screwed to the ceiling.0 -
Why do you ask. You are not expecting the table top to catch fire are you?I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0 -

Ionisation smoke alarms contain americium-241 and in normal use are not a risk to health
There are 0.9 micro curies of americium-241 in each detector, which is encased on a gold and silver matrix and then in plastic casing, making it impossible to access easily.
Optical smoke alarms do not contain any radiation at all.

Any smoke alarm will work on a table, the problem is that the room will have to full of smoke from ceiling to the table top for the smoke to get to the alarm. But as they have proper alarms then no reason not to put one on the table, next to the chocolate tea pot for the morning brew.0
