  • Thought I would update again, I have been up since 9am and checked downstairs at 9.30, 10am etc and no post.

At 10.30 I heard main letterbox sound, looked out window and saw white van and someone at door downstairs and as I was waiting for courier delivery thought it would be that.

Went downstairs and no post, and since we have never had a delivery past 11.40pm I believe they are the thieves.

Also same thing happened last Wednesday, waited in for courier and saw a white van (and same person) outside at 9.30, went down and no letters that day and despite me seeing the person drive off they blanked me(obv didnt want me to see their face)

Question now is what cna I do about setting a trap?

That I dont know, though the person looks like the ex tenant who was boasting about still having keys flatmate.

The sound I heard was either the letterbox going or the door being closed gently.

well report it to the police with the vehicle details
however if you cant/wont secure the property then you will always have this possibility
if it were me,I would rather collect my mail than risk what you are

Thats what I have been thinking, have told the landlord for over 2 months we think ex tenant has keys as well as my neighbours have told him and he just puts it off, he did promise on Monday to change locks yesterday but didnt turn up(no surprise)

He knows the ex tenant is being chased by the police for fraud, benefit fraud, identity theft etc but doesnt care.

I want to buy a new lock myself and change it but not sure rights as live in Scotland plus means have to get loads of keys made for neighbours.

Exactly what custardly said. As you live so close to the delivery office, this would be simple to set up and maintain. At least then your own mail would be safe. Let the others worry about theirs

Provided that you don't mind pi**ing off your landlord, apart from doing as custardy stated and reporting it to the police, why not send a recorded delivery letter to the landlord stating your concerns and informing him that you think an unauthorised person has keys to the mailbox and the door to the property.
Advise him that this may well invalidate any contents insurance held by yourself or other tenants and unless the situation is remedied ASAP, you will hold him personally responsible for any further losses.
