I never read reviews before seeing any film. I rarely read them afterwards either. I do make exceptions. However, the arguments I am fighting are from British journalists and bloggers who won't like the fact that 9/11 was used as a cheap plot device for what is in effect, a glorified scavenger hunt.

All the points you have mentioned, I have too albeit without posting spoilers. But I am banging my head on a brick wall in frustration.

Hi there. I'm a bit reluctant to see this film too . I'm sure as a human interest story it works very well, but i'm uneasy with the use of 9/11 as the backdrop.
Wont go and see war horse either for similar reasons. Seems like a piece of low level propaganda to me,- you know the good guys and thr nasty germans type. Been done a million times before and still not that convincing...However having said all of that i would go to a free screening, just wouldn't be prepared to part with my hard earned.

Without giving anything away as a spoiler for you or anyone else who hasn't seen War Horse, it isn't an anti German film. It is an anti war film. The film is based on the stage play and the book and although the narrative has been changed i.e. Joey the horse does not narrate the film, he story is true to both the original book and as such the play.

The whole point of Spielberg making the film is simply because it hasn't been done a million times before. He said he found it far easier to make his previous war films because he knows how to blow things and people up. This film does not have the graphic violence and is totally different to anything else he has made.

I'm not telling you to pay or not, just to put the film into perspective. :)

I personally think, that war/twin towers/other terrible events are part of history, our history. And keeping them fresh in out minds and reading/listening/watching stories that develop during those times will help us not to forget and pass down our experiences and feelings so hopefully we can all learn from them

    But, each to their own.

I particularly loved War Horse, it was sooo difficult to watch, but thanks to it i have researched and am currently reading about animals used during warfare. Some awful stories, some good ones. All part of life and learning.

The next preview i'll be attending is This means War. The husband thinks is a boy/war thing..... xD

After seeing the film I read some reviews (presumably American) which seemed to be totally focused on the "twin tower" aspect.
As far as I am concerned, this could have been any year, any location - the twin towers was not the centre of the film, although it did add to the poignancy
It was the loss, guilt, confusion and isolation of a boy with Aspergers. How he 'coped' after he lost his beloved father.
I absolutely adored "The Blind side" and was struggling to understand the role of Sandra Bullock in ELAIC . Thankfully the last ten minutes answered all my questions, and also made me feel guilty that I had ever doubted the love and devotion of Oskars mother.

Wonderful to have such a fabulous sympathetic enlightened view of ASD. No disrespect to Hoffman, but personally I feel we have had only Rain Man for too long now. It is called a 'spectrum' because there is a wide variety of presentations.

You're exactly right, and I hadn't thought of it like that.

There's a free copy of the Marigold Hotel book if you buy the Telegraph tomorrow in Morrisons (and some newsagents in areas where there are no Morrisons).

:rotfl: i know!! shhhhh don't tell him!!!
  • Saw the best exotic marigold hotel tonight in my local cineworld. All went very smoothly. The member of staff just took my printed ticket,- never asked for my nat west card, although i had it in my hand.
The cinema was almost full but not quite.
There were no searches of handbags either, and we had left our mobile phones at home anyway.
Best of all enjoyed the film a lot more than i had thought, and taking our own sweets in (which i always do anyway) made for a completley free evening.
    Here's to the next one:)

Glad to hear it all went smoothly, I didn't expect phones to be taken for this film. As I said that is rare and only for the really big films.

Good little film though. Great cast, so I hoped it would be a good one.

Was very pleased to have the proper warning about phones ahead of the film and security in with us.:T

I wish that verbal warning was used before ALL films as I don't think the mobile moron users understand the irony of the other ones! :(
