    start, run

    msconfig

you shouldn't remove all ticks unless you know what they are, follow the speedup sticky and post your commit charge and a hijackthis log.

install cleanmem, switch from avira to avast free

  • Which version of Ubuntu are you using? I use 10.04 in my desktop which is useable in 35 seconds and shuts down in about 7 seconds.
11.04 on Mrs. Crypto's laptop is slower (haven't timed it) and on my notebook running 11.10 is about the same as Windows 7. Methinks Ubuntu is getting slower.

I go from opening the lid to internet access in about 5 seconds

Mind you it is a macbook and isn't powered off :)
If I have helped in any way, and you feel like it - please press the thanks button

Have you installed "bootchart" ? (Handy little tool)
You get a nice .png image chart of what the machine does when it's boots.

it won't be too slow on XP and 512 meg RAM - if you tweak it properly you can easily get circa 16-20 processes running at idle, for a commit charge around 110-140 meg, and that includes a/v and firewall, even less if you want to be extreme. OKay, it won't keep up with some of the beasts of machines out there, but you can get it to be perfectly useable :)

there were 12 ticked boxes and i unticked all bar antivirus and start up was down to 2.5 minutes. But how do i know what ticks to remove- a lot of them were just letters and there was no way of getting information for each one.(ihave reticked all the boxes for now)!1111111 thanks

from switching on my pc to being able to open up the email or get onto the internet takes 4.5 minutes. Is this normal? i went and used my libraries computer and it was so much quicker, i am using avira antivirus, could this be slowing down the start up?

This is a possible sign of a slowly failing hard drive. It is not the only possible cause, but it is something I have seen a couple of times before. I do not want to panic you but do ensure you have good and useful backups of your stuff. If you are not sure, then find a friend you trust asap.

I could get technical and suggest you use a (ubuntu or similar) live CD and make use of its 'disc utility' which will usualy let you see the information that your hard drive keeps privately about its self, but that is another story.

    good luck
