Bless you! Didn't read it like that at all!!!!! :wink:Just I know some people expect to walk into a baby clothes dodgy jumble sale when I describe the idea in one sentence so just wanted to make sure that misconception wasn't assumed.

Flea72-some excellent points you've raised there. Thanks.

I'm not sure whether I've made this clear already but I will only sell immaculate stuff. If it needs steam cleaning then I shouldn't be selling it in the first place!

Also shows how much it depends on the area as the shop in Hastings had been going 7 years and had to move premises as the initial shop was too small and the shop I found in Stratford upon Avon had been going 19 years!

RachieB...my sister was exactly the same and splurged on my nephew as she wasn't able to with my niece.

Davina_M quick question...would you rather spend your £5 on a new outfit from primark or a 2nd hand immaculate outfit from Gap?

sorta jumping in and answering, i might be tempted to pay £5 for a 2nd hand Gap outfit, but for £5 i would expect to get at least a pair of trousers and a top, and it would also have to be no older than last season. however, in places like primark i could buy at least two tops and bottoms for £5, and with my children its more quantity than quality that ive needed, as they are messy pups.

i know price and location will play a big factor in whether this venture is successful or not, so where you plan to open up, do you think that you are filling a missing niche in the market,? i would have thought most towns had at some point had a childrens store, why are they still not there? are there lots of childrens boutiques doing a good trade? if you live in an area where people are prepared to pay money for higher end clothing/baby items, then there may be a call for such a venture, but if you dont have the suppliers of the items further up the chain to provide what you will need to stock 2nd hand, then it may be that there is little call for such a store in your area.

thinking about it, there is one shop in my area that sells 2nd hand prams/furniture/toys, but it is more along the lines of a junk shop, and obviously condition and price there is poor. we also have one place that sells 2nd hand maternity wear, but that isnt a shop, its just someone selling out of their house 'appointment only', and again prices are fairly high, and they only stock items that are immaculate and no older than last season

I'd agree that I would buy pretty much anything except mattresses and car seats second hand, although I can't quite bring myself to buy second hand re-useable nappies off eBay (I wouldn't hesitate to accept though if a family member or friend passed theirs onto me).

mainly because of fashion and trends, and also clothes that have been stored for a while tend to have faded. most people where clothing is concerned are more interested in style than quality, hence the fact the supermarkets, etc. sell cheap clothing, that is intended to be disposable. people who buy 2nd hand 'named' clothing arent buying it just for the name, they want something that is 'now'. even with expensive clothing, you can tell from styling how old it is. i saved lots of my eldest childs clothing for use on future children i might have, but once i got them out of storage, they just looked so raggedy, and dated. Hence the fact most 2ndhand stores (unless were talking proper retro styling) want clothing that is no more than 1yr old

Lol! It's a good point though...we all have things that we are fussy about, and things that don't bother us at all. I know I could wash the nappies within an inch of their lives, and they would be perfectly hygenic, but for some reason my brain just goes.....'NOOOOooooooooo'!

I wish I could get over it, cos my baby is due in 12 weeks and I really need to buy some nappies hahaha!
