Yeah I was going to say that. With your first you tend to buy all new and always end up with too many things and baby ends up not wearing/using alot of it. Its a great idea but do some market research in your local area first to see if there is a need/demand for the things you will be selling!

    Good Luck!!

I wouldn't buy a car seat second hand and I'd want to see things like pushchairs so a shop would be a good thing imo if it's somewhere obvious. I'd also be interested in the maternity clothes. If you set it up let me know where it is as I'm not far from Coventry.

Exactly the same here. I did buy a new high chair, play pen and breast pump though, which did both of my girl's...well actually granny bought them.

My brother bought us our moniter one of those clicky ones.

My DH made the stairgates for our house as it's a very old house and no others would fit .

I think there's so much pressure on new mums now to buy everthing new...advertising has a lot to answer for

My girl's were dressed in both new and second hand clothes........and they are now too!

We found money a real struggle when we had our first as I gave up my job( I was earning a very good wage ) to be a SAHM. Saying that, even if money hadn't been so tight I still wouldn't have bought everything new.

  • We bought a lot of clothing basics at the local car boots - vests, babygrows, etc. As I was washing them at 60C the minute we had some good weather to dry them, I wasn't worried about who'd had them.

We also got some decent stuff such as slings and reusable nappies off ebay.

LOL, the only new stuff I ever bought was for DD1, never made that mistake again and I've trained her so well that she is moaning about her baby being due just before the car boot season starts. I told her we will just start getting the basics and then look for stuff when she starts to need it :D

  • I bought nearly all secondhand things for my babies (new mattress for 2nd hand cot though). I also bought lots of lovely 2nd hand clothes too. My thriftyness enabled me to have 4 years off work to stay at home with my little ones - so well worth it. One of my friends had a new pram for each new baby (why?) and a nervous breakdown working to pay for them. I think its a great business idea.

I'm due number 1 in July and I'm adamant we're not getting into a financial mess to fund unnecessary shopping sprees. I personally have no memories of my life before I was about 3 so I see no reason that baby will care whether their gear is second hand. As I've never done this before I am not sure what preferences I'll have for things like prams, bedding, nappies so I'm buying as little as possible before the birth and virtually everything will be used goods.

I think a car seat will definitely need to be new, as will any mattresses, but other than those I'll just get what I need from family/friends/small ads/freecycle as I go.

Most people are horrified that we won't be decorating a 'nursery' for the baby, but I fail to see how some stencils and flash curtains benefit anyone except us! I wonder if maybe I'm just really tight .... :o

Good luck with your new enterprise, and if I lived anywhere near Coventry I'd be looking for a loyalty card!

Hi, I think most people use 2nd hand without thinking. How many first time mums put things away to be used next time? I know I did. When I found out I was pregnant with my daughter, I was horrified as she was unexpected and only a few things survived my chuck out after 2nd son as we 'weren't having anymore'.
As spendless said a few people can get the maternity grant but to be honest £500 soon amounts when spending and you would have hardly anything if you brought everything brand new.

  • I'd buy 2nd hand. As long as you can have the items properly checked, there's no reason they shouldn't be safe. Things like car seats are obviously of concern, but most things would be fine. So many people buy on Ebay and places like that. It would be nice to have a decent 2nd hand store to go to where you can actually have a look before you buy.

We had loads of 2nd hand stuff. Bought a pushchair from Ebay, and got loads of other stuff second hand.

We often used charity shops for clothes though cos they were DIRT cheap. Plus we got loads and loads of clothes anyway, which most people do.

Great idea. There is a place not far from my parents that does 2nd hand puschairs n stuff. I never actually went in there (bit far from me), but they've been around for years so it's obviously profitable.
