always makes me laugh when i read about no mobile phones etc in hospital as they could interfere with delicate ''medical'' devices - these delicate devices have exactly the same electronic innards as your laptop/sat nav/tv/car etc etc - they dont make special delicate medical electronics!!! - has anyone ever experienced any of these going kaput when they turn on their mobile or tablet - i very much doubt it

The below is a reasonable sum up.:D

    http://www.dh.gov.uk/prod_consum_dh/groups/dh_digitalassets/@dh/@en/documents/digitalasset/dh_092812.pdf

    4. Conclusion
4.1 The working presumption should be that patients will be allowed the widest possible use
of mobile phones in hospitals, including on wards, where the local risk assessment
indicates that such use would not represent a threat to patients’ own safety or that of
others, the operation of electrically sensitive medical devices in critical care situations
and the levels of privacy and dignity that must be the hallmark of all NHS care.
4.2 NHS trusts should familiarise themselves with the risks and issues when preparing their
mobile phone usage policy, not least patient privacy and dignity, patient safety and the
potential for interference with medical equipment.
4.3 NHS trusts should have a written policy regarding the use of mobile and camera
phones, cameras and video recording devices. It should be easily accessible to staff,
patients and visitors and have the patient at the forefront of any such policy. All staff
should be aware of the policy, and its reasons. The policy should be reviewed
    periodically.
4.4 All areas should be clearly marked with appropriate signage to leave patients, staff and
visitors in no doubt where mobile phones can or cannot be used.

I'll probably be flamed for my views, and maybe I'm old fashioned but I think that mobiles/laptops/whatever shouldn't be allowed in hospitals at all.

Hospitals can be noisy places, what with equipment being moved around and I had a particular nurse one time who insisted on wearing clogs on her night shifts, she kept the whole ward awake with her clopping about!

Personally, I want as much peace as possible to rest & recover (and read), without having to listen to folk nattering on their mobiles or the constant clicking of keyboards/pads. It's intruding on just about every aspect of life now, I'm sure most people have been sat next to somebody on a bus or train speaking loudly on their phone. It just irritates me!

And being allowed to have a 'camera' phone in a hospital ward? Who knows what could be photographed or filmed when people are in a very vulnerable position.

and since the OP seems to have a downer on power production (see sig) I'd love to know why he/she is so fussed about wifi in hospital...

no wind farms - fair enough (not that I agree)

    but no pylons?

how is the power to be transmitted then?

Personally I would rather leave my tablet/PC/wifi enabled devices safely at home than have them in a hospital locker while I was asleep/in a clinic/being seen by a consultant...
because I'm fairly certain that no NHS employee is going to guarantee some lowlife doesn't walk off with them while I'm out for the count!

    Westiefan - I'm with you 100%

    I mean - cameras? UGH!

and apart from anything else they don't keep you in there a moment longer than they have to - so lengthy stays in hospital are usually the preserve of the very ill - I mean gone are the days when a new mum stays in for a fortnight...

You have my support so you aren't alone.

Why on earth do people need to be connected to the internet all the time is beyond me. The time in hospital for most these days is very short and if for longer then you are no doubt very ill.

Hospitals are for rest and recovery.

it must be just what your trust provides as my husband has stayed in two merseyside hospitals in the last 3 months and they both had wifi. This was much to hubbbys delight cos he watched sky go,so we had no tv charges either.

My wife was in hospital for 7 days following the birth of our child. She found the hospital tv to have poor sound and ITV didn't work for her entire stay.

In the end she took my iPad and used the 3G on it to browse the web, use Facebook and her favorite websites between me leaving, baby sleeping and her feeling tired.

I think it cost £35 for the 7 days of hospital TV for her but £20 for the month of 3G subscription.

Hey M8....you are entitled to your opinion and I actually do have a lot of sympathy for your point of view regarding Wi Fi possibly spoiling the serenity of the Ward, particularly with telephones going off and loud mouths letting the whole Ward know exactly how the Piles or whatever are being cured!

Your photograph/filmed point is a valid one also.

Obviously I am coming from the direction of having respect for other patients in the Ward.

For myself.....I did not have a Telephone only my Pad which does not make any noise as one is just moving fingers over the screen.

I put my noise reducing headphone on which could not be heard by anyone and I could isolate myself as quiet as a mouse on my bed.

I just wanted to keep in contact with my E. Males and possibly even this Forum taking the risk that some pain would upset me with inkind words!;)

Your mobile phone, tablet or Laptop will not have to adhere to strict regulations regarding EMR and RFI. Medical kit does.
I work for a manufacturer of medical kit and we cannot even change the supplier of the mains lead without providing a papertrail to prove they conform to set guidelines.
All the power leads and PSUs used internally have to have noise suppression fitted. Even the data cables are wired with twists in some pairs to cut-out cross-feed.

First of all Valli I will thank you for not calling me an OP. I do not like to be labeled that way.....

Perhaps you are BP (Black Person) or a GP (Gay Person) or a MA (Middle Aged Person) I could go on and on and on.

If you are any of them.... would you like the label?

    "but no pylons?

how is the power to be transmitted then?"

Also, you have obviously not been reading my thread or understand what happens with Wind Farms, but with respect please allow me to try and explain how I see it.

    1. The Wind Farms get built to try and satisfy X amount of population.

Most of the time.....(How often do YOU see them going around?)

    2. There is no wind so they do not turn.

    3. There is too much Wind so they have to be turned off because (this
has happened) they blow up if left on.

    4. If it is too cold they have to be turned off also.

    5. Because of the above and many other reasons, Back Up Power Stations have to be built.

    6. Every new Power Station need brand new Pylons.

I could spend all ruddy night on this but I am exhausted!;)

I respect that point of view but I had mine in and came home with it!:D

By the way....I see up to now that the vast majority of people agree with ME!
