cake in a jar + update

My hubby is US Military, and on a support forum some of the ladies were talking about sending a cake in a jar in their care packages, sounds like a great idea. I want to do this, but not sure what Jars to use which are the UK equivalent, would Jam Jars do, and if so where can i buy them, with the lids to seal them properly??

This link explains what it is.

But just wondering if anyone has done this, or stores food this way and could give me any tips, advice, or point me in the right direction as to where i can buy the jars and lids.

  • Just had a look at the link and it sounds as if you will be wanting to get traditional preserving jars (ie to store jam, chutney etc) with the rubber seal and a good tight lid. You may be able to get these from your local Freecycle if you ask around, otherwise, I bought mine from Dunelm Mill, or you can get them from any kitchen shop.

Hope Hubby is ok even though he is far away
  • thankyou for the reply, hubby is doing good, actually i got a wake up call this morning ( 3 calls in 6 weeks ) gave me the best start to my day.
  • what a great idea!
I think you should be ok with any jam jar provided that the thin rubber ring on the inside of the lid is in good condition, i would also suggest nothing with a bottle neck type design (just so the cake can come out easily) and as long as you sterilise the jar and lid first and screw the lid tightly on while the cake is still hot then you should be fine... if you want to buy the jars (as opposed to re-using ones you already have) i'd say wilko would be the first place i'd look...
hope it all goes well, i'm sure your hubby will appreciate!

A different idea that might work?

when my dad was in the gulf I baked him a fruit cake and soaked it well in brandy for a week. Then I wrapped it tightly in foil (after pouring another good slug of his favourite brandy over it) and put that in a tupperware tub. sealed tub with parcel tape. put tub in sealed plastic bag (I was getting paranoid about the brandy swilling about in tub). When it arrived brandy was all soaked up and he and his friends had the best slice of fruit cake ever (well thats what he said!:D )

Had a begging letter to send another one but luckily he got to eat the second one at home.

I did buy some kilner type jars from tescos late last year - don't know if they would be any good.

    Good luck!

Yes just found them too, these are the ones i need, woo hooo.

    Also if anyone is interested

there are tonnes of recipes online, if you just type in cake in in a jar as your search.

These are great for gifts. Am gonna be doing these as gifts myself, the good thing is that they keep for a long time if the seal is not broken so can done way in advance.

These are definitely the ones that you want - Kilner jars have a narrower neck on the jar and the cake would not slip out.
