Hmm never heard of that... have heard of putting dry cake ingredients into a sealed jar though and giving those as gifts...

  • There are tins of cake and portions (in little covered plastic pudding basin type tubs) of sponge in the custard / rice pudding section of the supermarket - so cake must be something that keeps under the right conditions?

The jars used on the American sites are so-called "canning jars" ie the lids have a vacuum seal so they are air tight and neither they or their individual ingredients will go off anytime soon.

I don't fancy rancid butter or veg oil if that is used in the cake.:(

Does it go rancid in lemon curd or tinned macaroni and cheese?

It wont go rancid because it's sterile.

Good one I hadn't thought of that example.

Thanks OP what a great idea - I googled it and it seems ok if you're careful - what a brilliant gift idea - am seriously debating giving this a try for unique christmas presents

Dont know if this helps anyone but Ill add a link for the page explaining about it - it sort of explains why the cake is kept edible

Why would it be a time saver? , its going to take the same amount of time to make whenever you make it

Just because I could make a batch and cook them in one go, then eat them over the course of the year whenever I fancy instead of having to start baking each time.
  • This may be a silly question, but how would get it out of the jars.....? Sorry, my brain isn't quite working today...

The jars i've seen used in photos dont have a neck. But tbh I'm happy spooning it out if gets stuck and hiding it under custard!

I'm not 100% sure if this is allowed but here is a link to the thread I saw it on - the cake is post number 3. It has loads of great recipe ideas and you don't have to join to see the post - apologies if this isn't allowed and please can a mod delete the link if I was wrong to put it here!
