:rotfl:you got me fair and square Moneybot - I had meant to say they applaud independent travel and criticise package - clearly the trauma of this week has addled my brains.I do love the way this thread has polarised into pro and anti Thomas Cook and package holidays in general. A reported loss of £91m in the first quarter does not fill ones heart with glee but probably more to worry about if you are a share holder.
Would like this bit explained though:-
"I especially get sick of these so superior feeling people who sniffly criticise people who prefer independant travel and look down on those who travel package."
How are these people travelling then as they criticise independent travel and look down on those who travel package?
Nonetheless, there seems to be some stigma now applied to package travel, a completely ludicrous state of affairs. Being that I was reading this thread in the absence of my luggage, to say it struck a cord with me is an understatement. Not really fair though, to highjack the ops thread.:o I for one, apologise.LBM August 2011. DFD somewhere post [STRIKE]2025[/STRIKE]2022

Nobody should be without their luggage as we all need to know where our towels are. I don't think there is a stigma applied to package holidays. Some people always thought they were naff having said that Thomas Cook is in trouble but so are so many companies atm.
ps I do hope you get your luggage back; my husband also lost his luggage on a trip to India and it was annoyingRational judgement, now, at this very moment.

And you know this because
1. Your on the board of directors
2. Your a major shareholder
3. You read a lot of the crap thats written in the papers and on
the news.
4. Or you work for the opposition and are muck raking.
Unless im mistaken the banks haven't bailed them out since before christmas, so they're not keep bailing them out.
Sales at the moment are pretty steady, seeing as they've cut capacity by 10% and they were 8% up on sales before christmas all in all things aren't too bad. I didn't see it myself so don't know the full tale but some travel person was saying good things about TC on breakfast telly on tuesday.
Did you read the papers in the last few days where thomsons aren't performing so well either, maybe its something called the Recession.
Sam Weihagen says TC have sold 42% of its summer hols and Thomsons only 35% !!
Not me personally, but a family member.0 -
I wouldn't hesitate to use Thomas Cook at the moment, they are far better than Tompson (in my opinion). We have just (yesterday) had to book a holiday through Tompson, for June. Tried so hard to use another company but TC etc just didn't fly at the right times for us.0

We have just booked with thomas cook to go to turkey in september with no worries, as I cant see them going under and thomsons are so much more expensive for the same holiday its madness to give them the extra money.0

Not me personally, but a family member.
If a family member's on the Board of Directors at Thomas Cook, they'll know that the point made earlier in this post is correct - the reason a number of shops have been closed is because of the huge merger with Cooperative Travel, leading to duplication.
The family member will also know the banks don't keep bailing them out either.
The investment in Cooperative Travel was huge and bound to affect the bottom line in the first year until cost saving measures can be brought in, maximising the opportunity of this much larger group but minimising costs.0
