We could try a little experiment?
Pick a brand of tea bags or coffee or something else then just block any purchase of it for a month?
Then try it with something else? I dunno, if enough people did it, it might fall in price?

I know for sure Gold Blend is off limits at that price, the price of other coffees are crazy too lately. But as usual, beer is dirt cheap.

    Good thread, KorkyKat!

I stood astonished at the price of beef (all forms) in Morrissons yesterday, then did the same when I went to buy a bottle of own-brand vodka and a free range chicken in Sainsbury's today. These products (more or less chosen at random, I just happened to notice them) have been being nudged-up almost weekly by the supermarkets over the past year - way beyond the supposed inflation rate. And then there was a tin of butter beans somewhere else today - 97 pence!

I stood in Sainsbury's looking at the price of the traditional 'wholesome' 'raw ingredient' products we are supposed to eat and thought no wonder people choose the cheap mass produced 'junk' foods we keep being told are bad for us. It's all people can afford!

And yes you are correct - if we act together there is more power.

In theory, yes - but this is the UK!!!
Love to see it, but I can't see the numbers acting together being anywhere near enough.
People power is so vastly underused, which is a shame. I wish you luck and will read posts, but unless someone like Martin :money: got involved and say encouraged people to boycott products or better, one of the BIG 4, nothing will change. Price manipulation has got to be at it's worst now, the profit margins the supermarkets must be making will be massive. The BIG 4 squeeze both the suppliers and customers, it's not just the customers getting a bad deal!!

Sing me up for boycotting products higher than a certain price though, I've already been doing it for years, no doubt loads of others - still hasn't stopped anything though!!

  • Its completely disgusting how they can change their prices so randomly and quite frequently. I wouldnt mind if it was a couple pence here and there but when items almost double in price between weeks thats when it gets silly.

I remember buying Tesco's strawbery mousses 6pk for about 60-70p then a week later they were suddenly 90p and still are last time I looked.

It would be good if there was something similar to the amazon price tracker but for the supermarkets and involved some regulated user input.

I think some things are random or they chose cheap items with no alternative nothing cheaper so I have to pay the rise as rarly cant get reduced yogurts or wipes cheaper elsewhere.

I think tesco have hurt themselves with their manipoulative pricing
people are boycotting if you look at last lot of figures.

Does annoy me all the offers always choc, criisps luxury items.

Im really boring and want to see offers on
    sugar
    flour passaatta
    pasta
    tinned tomatoews
    stockcubes

stuff that eneables me to cook add value and make a meal!

I now refuse to buy full price bread unles semergancyt as seems to have gone up silly prices.

  • I completely agree with this thread, I have been trying to monitor prices of a few smart price things in asda for some time, particularly pasta as we eat loads of it! Last year they had penne pasta at its lowest of 9p a bag, standard price appeared to be 18p but that soon crept up to 25p, currently however it is about 45p. What I have noticed is they seem to hike their prices for a few weeks before they out the item on rollback or half price special offer. Another item in particular we like is the asda smart price curry sauce, standard price is normally 9p and is currently 17p, I have just used my last jar too, : (
I think the way forward is definitely to monitor prices and bulk buy when things are at their lowest, maybe we need a 'at it's lowest price thread'?

Used to be 25p a box! - wonderful bargain for 'wipe-it and chuck-it'.

Price slowly crept up to 30p, 34p, 40p, then in November to 45p. OK, still possibly a reasonable value.

In mid January the price was again increased, this time to 68p.....a 50% increase on the previous price!

As a matter of note, the boxes are marked "Buying this product helps you care for the world's forests" Perhaps the above quote should finish with "and Sainsburys profits".

OMG went to sainsburys today im bit mad to be honest.

went 2 weeks ago and brought

frozen sainsburys basic pizza for 50p Now 70p=20p increase

    basic pasta was 25p-now 40p

Shocked at value pepper increase always was 17p granted havent brought in few months.
    now 40p.

value herbs gone up from 17-20p

value choc angel delight dessert was 10p now 15p!

The value beans looked more pricey than lidls at 40p a tin.

its now worrying me I couldent have forsaw rises or wopuld have bulk buy.

now im thinking bulk buy anything I see cheap.

see value going up but never going down:(

    cant downshift lower than value

Will look on my supermarket and compare other supermarkets same items bet they all fixed the same.
rises in value hurt the poorest.
inflation seems to mean nothing when it comes to food.

luxury goods might be cheaper but everyone needs to eat.

really is hard to compare prices will pop into lidls and poundshop next week and reckon they be cheaper.
even brand names on multibuy might be better deal.

I think gailey has nailed the problem here. Supermarkets pretend to slug it out over the big brands, but only as a diversionary tactic to draw out attention away from the vicious and unprincipled price rises that they have imposed on their own brand products - notably the 'value' lines.

It makes a mockery of the 'fantasy inflation' figures spread by the government's propaganda mongers.

Everytime see inflation storys on the news want to chuck something at tv.

do foodprices run inline with cpi or rpi as assume retail so telling me cpi gone down below 5%it was still not feeling it!

Theres all this advertising live well for less -sainsburys, roll back asda and price drop tesco-result big fat con!

Why pick on value wonder if their taste the diffrence rising as much or is it a cynical move to raise value lines as consumer does not have any other choice.

Got to till and got usual silly question-do you need any bags?
Do I look like I can carry it all in my arms as I dont have a trolly.
They hoard the carriers and only give you a few.
so i took about 5 only needed 3 but we use as binbags and reuse in lidls and spar as tghey charge so bags my only luxury in sainsburys.

Then I spotted their free magazine at end of checkout

everyday easy and on front has

How to live well for less- stop shopping at saisnburys springs to mind!:rotfl:

Family freindly feasts-can baraly afford a meakl never mind a feast but its jan most people on diet so feasts dont really bother me.

great value meals from only £1.31 a person wow bargain

most of our family meals main course are 50p a portion could do 3courses for £1.31!

If it wasent for me doing several shops
    bulk buying
    buying reduced

then we would struggle as lot everyday thinsg we buy going up.

all this 20-30 here and there adds up.

    wonder if anyone else notices?
value items never on offers only brand stuff

over the year wonder how much it averages out per family in silly prices.
Based on things we buy maybe 10-20quid a month
    so £240 a year!
