I rarely shop at any of the big 4 supermarkets, reckon I'm quids in by avoiding them. I'll keep an eye on this thread as I'll be really interested to see if the originator ever gets a reply from Asda.0

Used to be 25p a box! - wonderful bargain for 'wipe-it and chuck-it'.
Price slowly crept up to 30p, 34p, 40p, then in November to 45p. OK, still possibly a reasonable value.
In mid January the price was again increased, this time to 68p.....a 50% increase on the previous price!
As a matter of note, the boxes are marked "Buying this product helps you care for the world's forests" Perhaps the above quote should finish with "and Sainsburys profits".
I was just going to come and post about this as my stash has nearly run out. Refused to buy them and muttered some rude words out loud in store:o I'm emailing them to complain.0 -
Good thread, KorkyKat!
I stood in Sainsbury's looking at the price of the traditional 'wholesome' 'raw ingredient' products we are supposed to eat and thought no wonder people choose the cheap mass produced 'junk' foods we keep being told are bad for us. It's all people can afford!
I second that KorkyKat !
A Badger that's a really salient point. Supermarkets push the healthy eating message but put junk food on special offer - Tesco seems to do this more than others IMO.
People buy it either because it's cheap and all they can afford or because they can't cook. In my experience it's a myth for telly chefs and others to tell us that cooking from scratch will save us money because that's not always the case. I can't make a fish pie for 99p, for example.
But you get what you pay for, more or less. As a student, I put the lids on cheapo Sainsbury's ready meals in a factory making them and basically everything but the tail and hooves goes into the mincer.0 -
great value meals from only £1.31 a person wow bargain
most of our family meals main course are 50p a portion could do 3courses for £1.31!
If it wasent for me doing several shops
bulk buying
buying reduced
then we would struggle as lot everyday thinsg we buy going up.
You can cook, lots of people can't.... be bothered.
You buy reduced items, I know people who baulk at the idea.
You buy in bulk, oh but it's so much bother/clutter, etc.
In other words to you and me and other people on here family feasts for x amount may seem insane. But we're not who they're marketed towards and to other people they might be just the push they need to get them into saving money. What was the name of the programme with allegra mcavedy and the guy? I can't remember but it was on a few years ago and involved taking families with budgets of £300 a week and reducing them to £150 - oh the uproar on here!! I can feed a family for £5 a month with a rubber chicken, a piece of string and a handful of wooden clothes pegs so why can't they???!!!!!!
Well the answer is simple you know how to cook and save money, you've been taught - either by parents, or on here, or just general savviness - but other people haven't. And to them the family meals for x are a great saving

I don't buy junk btw (other than cereal *rolleyes*), I prefer to shop seasonally and at the farm shop (I realise I'm lucky to have a decent one near) and buy offers when I see them. I wouldn't pay the money for crisps - they've no nutritional value what-so-ever so cost more in terms of filling up and stuff - in my opinion.
I don't buy chocolate cos for the disgraceful price of it now I could've have a chicken breast/nice portion of dinner :rotfl::o0 -
I think the BIG 4 are getting very expensive now, especially for the small shopper.
Everything seems to be targeted at the big spenders, 10p litre off petrol when you spend £60 or more, £5 off your next £40 spend, etc, etc. You don't see 50p off a £5 spend!!
The money off only brings the prices down to what they should be, in fact still too high. These aren't really genuine offers, the items are priced up to allow for such promotions. Savvy shoppers will and do take advantage, using the "incentives" combined with offers and also using coupons. Sadly for others, they haven't got the time and are prepared to pay for convenience.
The BIG 4 and not after the SMALL FRY, thankfully I'm NOT one of their intended market.

I went to Morrisons to stock up on their fizzy vit C today because I have a cold and it is good for me. The highest price I have ever paid is £1.10, but today it was an astounding £2.50 per tube! An increase of nearly 150% in a couple of months. This has put me off Morrisons actually and I didn't buy it.0

The small jars of Bovril used to be less than £1, the price has been creeping up for the past year, it's now £2
It's one of the few things I MUST have and I ended up buying the larger jar as it was better value, but at £2.99 that's quite a chunk from my budget.
Value fromage frais and lunch box sized orange juice have gone up loads and I find the orange juice goes up by 40p or so and then gets artificially rolled back. What fools do they think we are?
I've found Aldi to be great recently.0 -

Lidls do a 5pack small orange juice cartons 5 for 99p.
farmfoods do 24pack apple and orange for 4quid.
Value fromage frais cant help there as tesco upped to 50p so did sainsburys but not so sure if asda/morrsions upped too as havent looked was last few weeks paid 52p in co-op today.
my kids love lidls 12pack not cheaper but good at £1.35 a pack.
Agree with lindsey i never did morrisions xmas card as cant spend £40 a week.
In sainsburys annoyingly we would do big shop then get time related coupon of a week to spend another huge amount which we couldent do.
Now im shopping around only spending small amounts in each store.
I taught myself to cook got better and much savier over the years.
my mum rarlky cooked brought readymeals, gies tesco metro 2-3times a week and moans shes broke whilst refusing farmfoods/adlis as hates it . tonight she told me so much in asda was £1 which still seems pricey to me wehn can get aldi super six at 59p and got
4bags reduced onions at 29p a bag-they last ages
blueberries, cherries and blackberries was £2 down to 49p.
granny smiths my bugbear they son pricey yet discovered aldi does them for 99p a bag:D even sainsburys basic with 4apples is £1.50.
