Does it have lots of chemicals in it? I was just researching bicarb soda to clean the oven and I like the idea of not using chemicals but bicarb is expensive for the amount you need to use!

Oh thanks for that, I usually use ovenpride as the oven is my worst job.

I agree with you. Astonish products are excellent and a good range can be found in Home Bargains.

SallyD, Do you know if Home Bargains sell Astonish carpet cleaner? There isn't one near me but I would be prepared to go further afield if I knew I could get some.

No. I think all Astonish products are natural, and not tested on animals either. The main ingredient seems to be soap and a mild abrasive. I think it's like that more expensive product which was in the papers the other day for nearly £10 from Lakeland!

I use mine to clean the shower too - good for cleaning off the limescale.

Soda crystals are also a very good product - I've used them to clean my oven (the spray bottle one is good for this) - as they cut through grease very well.

My Mum started using it in the early 90s when she got her first ceramic hob. She raved about it and i've been using it ever since.

I believe my local 99p store sells astonish products, also worth checking out Savers.

I bought a deal to get someone in from Groupon, £24 and total waste of money, not one where they dip the oven interior in the van and found that the top of my oven wasn't totally clean, plus (after cleaning up) they'd left bits of wire wool on the floor in my kitchen and on the work surface. Complained several times by email but no reply.

Bought a can of Mr Muscle 30-min no scrub stuff from Wilko for £2.90-odd (not the kind of stuff you want to breathe in) as they didn't to my grill as pary of the deal (despite me not having an extractor fan) and did a far better job for minimal effort (just make sure it doesn't drip on nikel plated handles etc)

btw, my mum always uses Oven Mate as this is what my grandma used to use too - seen it in Lakeland and seems to have good reviews - sometimes the old'uns are the best

  • Stood with a brillo pad last night and managed to uncover some silver colour on the racks in the oven :rotfl: My arm went unconscious so will finish off later.

Found some Stardrops today in Poundland so will tackle them again, plus the inside of the oven too. Hopefully it'll work like a dream :)

  • Hi, not sure if this has already been mentioned earlier in the thread:

When I open my oven door there is a gap between the hinges and the opening which attracts crumbs, baked on stuff, muck etc. They drop down and get stuck in the gap-the hinges are on both side ends so I can't even push the muck out....
Apart from reaching inside it with a toothbrush, does anyone have any ideas as to how I can get the dirt out??
I was thinking of trying the nozzle on the hoover to suck up the dirt funnily enough-aside from unscrewing the whole door, (which I really don't want to do) I'm a bit stuck!

Also when there is dirt stuck between the 2 panes of glass, do other people unscrew these and take them out to clean? So wary of either dropping them or not being able to screw them back in!

Any advice appreciated-thanks in advance :)
