Smelling Gas

My boiler is ten years old. The outflow vent from the boiler is on the outside of the house.

anybody that comes to my house through the backyard comments on the gas smell.
To me its normal, Ive had it serviced many times and been told its normal as its venting out of the boiler automatically.

My boiler was checked when lit, smoking candle put in and watched the vent suck the smoke outside. this is to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

So why is it that people who call comment on the gas smell and they looked shocked?

My boiler is a vaillant turbomax.

  • we just bought a new house and could smell gas outside the owner fobbed us off saying it was coming from the boiler and normal, after completion and when the boiler wasnt even on we could smell it again, called the emrgency services and a gas inspector came within the hour, he found a leak outside the house on the driveway seeping through a very narrow crack.
He said older properties still have pipework that corrodes in time with the weather, ours was built in the 60's.
We still have no gas but have not moved in yet and are waiting for them to come and lay new pipework and fortunately for us we will now have the meter outside and to lay it they will just dig a part of the garden rather than the drive and it won't cost us a penny.
 Wisdom doesn't necessarily come with age.
Sometimes age just shows up all by itself ;)

In the end, it's not the years in your life
that count....it's the life in your years :D
  • Get a qualified engineer to come out and do a drop test on the gas pipe.

Any smell of gas is NOT normal. Get it looked at asap
  • If you can smell gas inside or outside phone Transco 0800 111 999 they operate 24/7 like someone else said you may have a leak outside or your boiler could be faulty, better to be safe than sorry
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.

You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.

There's a smell to the burnt fumes coming out of the vent though isn't there.... Is it that smell rather than neat gas?

Yes it is, but people comment its gas. Drop test was done a month ago. This is normal for a combi boiler, ive had several drop tests done at every service. There is nothing wrong and there is no leak of gas. I know its not neat gas.

Its smells normal to me, but to everyone coming up my yard they say gas.

My vent is about 6ft up the wall, next doors is higher. My engineer even altered the overflow pipe coming out of the wall to bend inwards so the water cools down on the wall whereas before it dropped straight to the floor.

It's probably more to do with the height and position of it than anything else.

Mine is a similar height on the driveway and you can get a blast of burnt gas hitting you. Many have their boiler upstairs or in places where you don't walk right past it, so it could just be your location of the vent that causes people to get a mouthful of completely normal fumes expelled from the vent.

So "everyone" is wrong and you are right.

If you're happy with it, don't do anything - that's your decision. I would get Transco to check outside for a gas leak.

Wasn't that the boiler that was tested? The boiler could be working properly but there could be gas leak from a pipe outside.
