  • hi there, i was sorting out same problem, few days ago I took what Plusnet offers - broadband with month by month contract - 10GB monthly (after that every 5GB for £5), and price is £19monthly (internet aprox £6 + line rental aprox £12).

Okay, I've done a bit more reading up about LLUs.

So assuming I can use these all in my property (centre of large city), what do I need to have in place? I assume I need BT line rental on top of it? And a modem + router?

Then how quickly can they set it up? The BT line is installed in a week, can I be up and running the same day?

    Thanks :)

If you are getting BT to install your line then LLU is out of the question, unless you are willing to pay off the full 12 month BT line rental up front, and then cancel to allow you to move to one of the LLU providers.

To use an LLU provider, your line and rental must also be with them.

The problem with PlusNet is they charge £50 installation fee and £25 broadband activation for no contract.

This gets me to the £32/month I quoted in the first post.

Anyway, 10GB is way too little. For the next package it is £36/month over six months with PlusNet!

Is this definitely true? I was getting PO phone line on monthly contract and I heard you can still use LLU with this?

Do all the LLU providers linked above allow PO line or do I need their phone.

And then is it still fine to install in a flat with no phone socket yet and how quickly can it be set up?

    Thanks,

Right calling people up and have learned so far:

ADSL24 require 5 working days from order to get set up.
Vivaciti require 7 working days from phone line being installed(!)
Xilo charge £48 connection and £39.60 disconnection!
Aquiss charge 47.95 connection and £30 disconnection.

Looks like I'll go with ADSL24 but am also eyeing up a 3 One Plan SIM.

    Not true.
Example Vivaciti Variety LLU - "Variety is an LLU (local loop unbundling) service, this is an SMPF (Shared Metallic Path Facility) service meaning your phone line will not be switched with your broadband."

http://www.openreach.co.uk/orpg/home/products/llu/mpf/mpf.do "...you can provide a broadband service to your customer while another communications provider supplies voice services on the same line – hence it being “shared”"

Although TalkTalk themselves only do Full MPF on Opal/CPW equipment other ISPs will do the shared variety so landline can stay on Bt's network.

These all look fantastic! But I've never heard of any of them - what's the catch and why is it such better value than any usual ISPs?
They're slighty more expensive than the usual suspects on here that provide LLU products ie. Talktalk, but supply value products over LLU so far cheaper than Plusnet or Orange can do over BT Wholesale.
I use Xilo/Uno, same network as TalkTalk (Opal/CPW) but it actually works and the support is excellent. £25 for 75G inc. line rental, no traffic shaping etc. and have used ADSL24 before, only moved cos they didn't do LLU at the time.

Here's were there's more info on these guys - http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/otherisp.html?view=collapsed

Okay, I've spoken to more people and here's the deal:

YES you can use any phone line you want with these people. ASDL24, Vivaciti, Acquiss and xilo are all happy with it. The cheapest monthly phone line is Post Office at £12.25/month with no connection or disconnection charge.

However, these deals aren't as good as they all seem initially as they all have a disconnection charge of about £30.

    So with ADSL24 over 6 months you'd pay £12.25 phone, £18.90 internet and £29.90 disconnection making a total of £216.80 or £36/month!

With Vivacity you pay £12.25 phone, £16.80 internet and £29.69 disconnection making a total of £213.99 or £34/month!

With both of these you also need to buy a router/modem.

PlusNet charge £50 connection, £25 no contract then £12.99 phone and £11.49 internet for 60Gb which makes it over £36/month!

But I had a brainwave. Unlimited tetherable internet with 3 on the SIM only One Plan. This is only £25/month plus £20 or so for a dongle. This all adds up to £170 over six months which is just £28.33/month.

Can anyone beat this for a decent short term internet service?

With cashback on that 3 Mobile offer you also get about £50 (I assume it tracks even if you only use for one month) which gives yo a total price of £120 or £20/month.
