Cooking Jacket Spud with a Metal Skewer

I saw this tip on Superscrimpers and wondered if it worked...

We love oven-baked jacket spuds but they take ages to cook properly. The tip was that if you put a metal skewer straight through the spud before it goes in the oven, you can half the cooking time as the heat of the skewer helps to cook the potato from the inside.

Anyone know if it's true? Jacket spuds seem to take 1hr 15mins in our oven (an hour doesn't quite get them soft in the middle). Halving this would certain cut the electricity bill!

  • It does work because the metal gets very hot and the heat is transfered into the centre. I only use normal size potatoes for jackets mine take about 50min think it took a few minutes off but not half. Worth a go if you have some around but watch out so easy to burn self on!

Thanks both - I'll have to check our BBQ supplies to see if we have any skewers. :)

Wish my MIL had watched this programme - she complains if I use anything past its best before date. Thinks I'm going to poison her son. *sigh*

I zap mine in the microwave for 8 minutes then crisp up for 20 mins in the oven as I don't like soggy skins :D
Wonder which way works out cheaper? Will have to hunt out my leccy meter thingy and see

get her to read this forum, i hate it when ppl think food has a watch and at 00.01 it goes, right i'm mouldy, i've got off, completely unusable.

can you not explain there is some lee way since companies don't want to be sued.

or there is the other option of just taking things out of packaging and not telling her. tee hee hee

I do the same; microwave until fairly soft then put in v hot oven to crisp...wonder if you could micro and then grill on both sides for crispiness, though?

She is just ultra-paranoid about everything to do with food safety. Doesn't matter that even the NHS say that "best before" means just that - it might not taste so good after this date.

I get forwarded every single internet rumour about the latest food/additive that's going to give me cancer.

Coincedentally, DH and his sister are the fussiest adult eaters I know; to the point of being ridiculous. I keep complaining to DH about the fact he won't eat/try any vegetables at all. What's going to happen when we have kids and they see daddy not having to eat veg? *sigh*

    Rant over. :o

    We use something like this:

    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Premier-Housewares-Bygone-Potato-Baking/dp/B005CNQGGC/ref=pd_sim_sbs_kh_1

We have two, still going strong after at least a couple of decades.
