No absolutely not. The Greeks have an unsustainable debt burden - if that can be reduced by write offs or favourable finance terms then 'the children' will have a better future. It won't happen with a party in power who are itching to nationalise banks and industry.Graham_Devon wrote: »As for forcing governments out, I truly hope they don't succeed. I'm surprised you hope they do suceed. The government was democratically elected. We can't have a super europe forcing governments out that they don't agree with. It would cause all manner of issues and extreme political groups.
The Greek government called a referendum and promised to resign (probably forcing new elections) if there was a yes vote. Can't get more democratic than that.
Sorry for ignoring most of your post but you're starting to rant.0 -
FT is reporting that Tsipras has capitulated. It remains to be seen if he can get this through Parliament:0

No referendum then.Don't blame me, I voted Remain.0

These are amendments in return for a new deal based on the ESM (the €29.1bn thing)
It doesn't appear to be accepting what was offered by the EU or the IMF?
Having said that, if they have promised a referendum and are now going to call it off (which we don't know) then that's very poor.
Merkel has quite categorically stated that there will be no deals before a referendum has taken place, so wondering if she too will now pedal back on that?0 -

Tsipras must have been wearing crampons for that climb down!
Greece is a beacon of democracy and they'll be having a referendum about it on Sunday. The people, not parliament, will decide.0 -
And Wolfgang Schaeuble is apprarently reporting that any new amendments are now too late, described as "pouring cold water on any negotiations".
He also states that "There is no basis to have serious negotiations with Greece at the moment".
So it looks like Germany, at least, is using this letter as bog roll.0 -

It's a U turn.0 -
Wolfgang Schaeuble now states that Greece has to make it clear what it wants.
Not entirely sure what he means, as surely the letter is quite clear?
Edit: Wolfgang now states that the letter "lacks clarity". Leading to questions of what does Germany want?0 -

Tsipras has humiliated himself. I reckon a deal will now be done - even Merkel has a heart.
See you back here in a couple of years.0
