Is it me or is this getting really daft.Greece were never solvent ,yes they lied to get into the Euro ,but we knew they were lying .What were we doing to let them join ,the EU does not seem to understand that it is equally culpable as it clearly does not have the checks in place to uncover such practices .If they come out of the Euro then nobody gets their money . That nice Mr Putin then cosies up to them and bingo you have a bigger problem than you've currently got .
Who is this 'we'?
As far as I'm aware, we (as in the British, this being a British site an'all) have FA 'culpability' for any of this Greece mess; since we are not in the Euro.0 -
Why don't we simplify this and cut through the bumf: Greece is seeking to do what many of us on MSE warn against and that is taking on more debt to pay off debt. Or to put it another way they are seeking to borrow more money from the people they are in debt to and they have to make a payment to. But that's only if their creditors won't write off what Greece owes. A recipe for disaster if ever I saw one! In the meantime Greece's citizens continue to withdraw money from the banks no doubt to keep it under their safer mattresses.0

Vangelis Marinakis, owner of Greek champions Olympiakos Piraeus, has been banned from soccer as an investigation continues into allegations that a criminal organisation is controlling the domestic game......The Olympiakos president is accused of being involved in and directing a criminal organisation, aiding and abetting blackmailing, aiding and abetting extortion, and aiding and abetting bribery and fraud.....Marinakis' hearing came 24 hours after former Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) president Giorgos Sarris was banned from football and ordered to remain in Greece as part of his bail terms.

09.23am:
"OK, I’ve picked my jaw up off the floor now. Greece apparently sent the wrong document to its creditors late last night.
That’s according to Anne-Sylvaine Chassany and Peter Spiegel of the Financial Times, who report:Three senior officials say there’s been a mix-up with the documents sent to the bailout monitors.
“It’s not so dramatic, but they sent the wrong one by mistake,” said one of the officials...
The officials said the Greeks intended to submit a new version this morning, but it remained unclear whether they had done so. Two officials said they received a revised version during the early morning hours on Monday, but the third official said they had not yet received the new version. "

Are you joking? They sound just the right type for politics. Lets face it, if they can't even beat the Faroe Islands, they need to be considering their options anyway.Chuck Norris can kill two stones with one birdThe only time Chuck Norris was wrong was when he thought he had made a mistakeChuck Norris puts the "laughter" in "manslaughter".I've started running again, after several injuries had forced me to stop0 -

Nonetheless we are in the IMF and are probably owed a couple of billion sterling in SDRs as our share of the current bailout....still I guess we are the most senior creditors....I think....0 -
The Greek banking system has just been bailed out again for another day. They are literally getting day-by-day funding now.
The EU is starting to turn the screw.0 -
The fact that the Greek people are taking out cash and keeping it under the proverbial mattress is nothing new. Even before the crisis you would often see people bringing out great wads of cash in shops when paying for something.0

Definitely Greece.
I can recall that Scotland famously failed to beat the Faroe Islands on at least two occasions. However the real issue here is not so much that Greece failed to beat the Faroe Islands, but more that they have actually lost (twice) to the Faroe Islands.Nonetheless we are in the IMF and are probably owed a couple of billion sterling in SDRs as our share of the current bailout....still I guess we are the most senior creditors....
The UK may well have to eat a small loss. But we are not culpable for the decision to allow Greece to join the Euro.0
