Free eaga ShowerSmart
As part of the Government’s commitment to reduce the amount of energy we use, eaga, working with the Government and energy suppliers, have a free eaga ShowerSmart available.
These products are free of charge so that the Government and energy suppliers can continue working towards their important energy saving targets.- The eaga ShowerSmart is suitable for all non-electric showers and regulates the flow rate of a shower to 7.8 litres per minute – the equivalent of a powerful electric shower
- For mains-pressure showers (where hot water comes from a combi-boiler or similar), this saves both water and the associated energy with heating hot water.
- For a 2-person household, the eaga ShowerSmart will typically save more than 12,000 litres per year*, cut carbon emissions by 1 tonne* of CO2 over its lifetime and save about £20* on gas and £20* on water bills (where metered) per year.
- For the average family, this would equate to savings of about £30 off their gas bills and over £30 off their water bills (where metered) per year.

Is it just me or does anyone else find the enthuiasm over a free gadget which I assume makes your shower less enjoyable perplexing?
If everyone is so keen to save money and water why not just turn down the tap and/or the temperature?
Out of all the web results I have not managed to find a single report on its use, other than a highly suspect puff piece.
And even more to the point, if as some forum members say, it cannot be used on a power shower (why not if it needs mains pressure?) why is not that clearly said in the web literature to save the expense, waste, CO2 etc of sending one that cannot be used?
Just because it's free does not mean it's any good. It was not so long ago the water companies were making a big deal about handing out FREE plastic bags to slip in lavatory cisterns to save a pint or two - until people found out their toilets did not flush well enough with them.0 -

Surely it does say it? " provided they run off the mains water pressure"
A power shower does not run off mains pressure, the mains pressure is boosted by a pump and thus pressure is above mainsEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -

I have had the toilet bags and the gel ones, after a few weeks they all got binned as the toilets didn't keep clean enough and double flushing was being done on number 2's to get rid of everything. We ended up using more water.
I got a showersmart 6 months ago and tried it on two showers which are both on a pressurised system. It did exactly as it said it would, it restricted the water flow reducing consumption and an even spray was achieved. I was pushing the device on my family and on day 2 they were all refusing to shower with it. I persevered for a week and then I stuck it in the cupboard. If you enjoy a shower don't even think about getting one of these as all the pleasure is taken away. There are plenty of ways to save more money more easily than this. I'd rather shower 2 minutes less.
The showersmart also says it will save money on your heating bills. Well in our case we have a 180 litre tank which is heated for one hour each morning. We get 3 showers out of this each morning. If we use less water using showersmart we have still heated it, it is just left in our tank to get colder until the next time we heat it.
In my opinion showersmart is a waste of time. I think using an aereated shower head would be far better at reducing water usage while maintaining a better shower experience although I've not used one.0
