    I understand that, but you must understand that is for the average student. So if a piece of homework should take 30 minutes, some children will be able to whizz through it in 20 minutes and some children will take longer.

    Telling him to stop after 30 minutes is an awful thing to do and sends all the wrong messages. If he's doing as well with his academic subjects as you say, it shouldn't be taking him that much extra time to do but he may get better results by spending longer on it.
