I have been a M/S for around 14 years the work isn't as good as it used to be with fee's falling I still do some but now just cherry pick as some places want you to work for nothing (ie the "meal" is the payment)
I do some MS as well, but as you said I pick & choose what suits me. The fees aren't very high, so usually there is no point going out of my way.The problem is there aren't the local friendly knowledgable travel agencies around anymore that you can trust, that I used to use.
I did go to the large holiday superstore Nikki will know which one I mean) & if they could have done the job for a good price I may have been tempted to use them this time.
I walked into this barn of a place and was asked what I wanted. "xxxxx will be available in a minute he's an expert in what you want."
No he wasn't, first we tried with the package company they were affliated to I had a few basic questions he couldn't answer. He did a quote & a brief print out & I asked "can you see if booking it all seperately works out cheaper", he did & was amazed it was £1000 cheaper than their own package & a couple of the roving staff came over to congratulate him.
Despite being told he was an expert from some of the answers I was getting back I knew he wasn't & when pressed he had never been to America !! let alone Florida
When I got home looking at his two printouts I found three glaring mistakes including one wrong date now how could I even think of booking with them with any confidence. Yes he did spend a long time but had he known what he was doing he needn't have.Fudge_Cake wrote: »:(:(:(:(:(:(:(
Sorry I'll go and sit on the naughty step!
Just to clarify I'm not necessarily saying I won't book through a travel agent, goodness knows it will be much easier than booking everything seperately! I have atleast 3 travel agents in the very small town in which I live, one of which is an independent and whom a friend has used for years and always got very good deals from, but that's mates rates. If a travel agent were to offer me a deal with a small fee for their services then of course I would be more than willing to pay, but if the increase was almost 100% as was the case when QPR10 enquired about her holiday to Orlando then I'm afraid that it's only a matter of time before the travel agent goes bust all by itself! I will as I said already be parting with a sizeable amount of money for insurance for myself and my mother so as T's would say....every little helps!
I wasn't trying to upset anyone, I think this is the same in every business nowadays what with the growth of the Internet. Until recently I worked for an Opticians and not a day would go by without a customer asking for a contact lens prescription so they could buy their lenses online.
I think a lot of travel agents are not that great these days. They just do not get the training in all the many different areas. Personally I find I get better info by researching everything myself. There is so much info online these days. Obviously when you look at something like Tripadvisor you expect the odd bad review, but you can get a good general feel of how good the accomodation is. There is also info out there on airlines, cruises and car hire companies. I'm lucky that where ever I want to go there is usually someone in our office that has been there recently.
I like cruises but I hardly ever take the ships planned excursions. I rent a car and go off and explore for the day, take a trian, or book a local guide recommended by previous cruisers to that port. It costs a fraction of the price, and I enjoy it more than trapsing around with a coach trip of 50 other people!0 -
Hiya guys and thanks for the kind words and hugs, much appreciated
Mam still passing blood today and groaning, but managing to eat and drink ok
My train was running late from Kings Cross, was 15 mins late at P’boro and got later as travelled North, getting into Newcastle over 40 mins late - at least as it was over 30 minutes late, I can claim half my fare back in travel vouchers, which will be enough for a free normal pre-booked first class fare
My sis & b-i-l picked me up and dropped me at my brother's, as they want the car at home in case they get a call from the home during the night, but I will be going down in morning to see Mam if we don't hear anything else
Had an hour chat with brother and then brought case upstairs, unpacked, changed into pj's, washed, into bed and come online for half hour or so which has turned into 1 ½ hours as I was determined to catch up on here before posting and getting to sleep
I have loved your holiday pics HC and Westie - fantastic :T :T
Gonna log off now and gets some sleep - goodnight to all you good folks :AMr 3Dogs 3-7-12

Singing 10 green bottles to my son but he never slept so I had to do 100green bottles, 100 red bottles.
When he went to sleep I would put him in his cot and by the time I got back into bed he would be screaming again!
My husband did nothing to help - "that's what maternity pay was for".
Needless to say the selfish so and so is now my EX!
My ex wasn't quite that bad but financially it was down to me to feed, clothe & buy presents for his kids (including the one that wasn't mine). I don't begrudge my own kids and never felt like that towards his first child until I was "told off" for buying different yogurts for his 1st (I had to work with offers, dates, access arrangements and flavours that the kids would all like) and for not letting that kid drink DSs smoothies (he'd gone off fruit so that was the only way I could get some into him). I could understand if I wasn't buying his child anything, it's the fact that he never put his hand in his pocket yet reserved the right to say how I spent my money. He never bought the boys any clothes or more than a couple of toys while we were together so at least now he has to act like a father.
But that's ancient history now. One thing I'd love to see however is his food bill. I can't remember the last time he paid for the shopping even though we split all the other bills 50/50 (hence my annoyance that it was left to me to pay for everything except half the household bills). Wanna bet he doesn't get free food or 1p glitchescalmspirit wrote: »I was so not good at telling them off......nobody gave me lessons in how to be 'mum' when inside I was wetting myself laughing at what they did! I work in an infant school at the moment and I really dont know how people keep a straight face with some of things the kids do and say!
Oh thank god it's not just me. I remember watching an episode of Super Nanny and seeing a mum crack up when she tried to tell her child off. I sat there, childless, criticising her for laughing instead of being stern. Turns out I'm that mumI can't help it. DS1 knows how to be cute and I have to physically bite my lip and/or tongue to stop myself from laughing when he tilts his head to the side, gives me the big puppy dog eyes and says "sowee".
Can so relate to that, I lost 4 years of watching any soaps when my DS was born, he refused to go to sleep before 9pm and I laid on the bed for 2 hours every night singing the Barney song to him!!!Then I'd pretend I'd gone to sleep and open one eye to see if he was asleep and he'd open one eye to look back at me:rotfl::rotfl:Can laugh about it now but it was a nightmare and I know made a rod for my own back by doing it:o The things us mums do!
I've been fairly lucky with DS2. DS1 was never in a routine so each evening consisted of spending anywhere from 30mins to over 2 hours reading, sitting in darkness and tip toeing across the room (avoiding all known creaky floorboards) only to barely reach the stairs and he was wailing again. With DS2 I can have a routine as I don't have someone telling me how to raise my kids. The boys have dinner, playtime then a bath most nights (if I haven't been visiting my folks). They go down fairly easy albeit they both sleep in my room.
DS1 started coming into my bed when the ex & I were at the end of the marriage. Once the ex was removed, DS refused to even sleep in his room so I share a king size bed with my 2yo and my almost 1yo is in his cot in the same room. I've no idea what it's like to have the bed to myself but I wouldn't have it any other way if that's what keeps my boys happy. Dreading the ex getting overnights though as I know I'll feel like I've lost a limb not sleeping with one ear open or getting kicked in the ribs0 -

Can so relate to that! If I try and tell DD off she comes and puts her hands round my neck and gives me a kiss! Or she does the head tilt and says hiya in a sweet little voice then blows a kiss! They're no daft that's for sure :rotfl::rotfl:
