I explained that DTD was Tesco's apology for overcharging and didn't affect their 28 day promise of a refund for whatever reason. I was not by the way trying to claim the price I paid, but the price I should have paid so all was above board and honest.
She stuck to her guns and I snatched the receipt from her hand and told her how she clearly didn't know her job and that I'd be phoning HO.
I did so and HO phoned the store and she flatly refused to entertain the idea.
HO are sending me a giftcard for what I was entitled (HO chap was very helpful and knew his policies inside out and said she was well out of line and said it would be 'dealt with' internally....he didn't sound impressed with her at all) and told me to keep the items.
Her pigheadedness has not only brought some retraining to her store, but its annoyed her bosses and cost the company she works for a lot more money than if she'd refunded what I was due!!
Some staff can't see past their own self importance sadly.
I'll be in that store again at the weekend....I hope my giftcard comes before then as I have every intention of rubbing her nose firmly in it!!!
This happened to me too recently.
Despite HO telephoning to tell the CS Manager (yes, Manager!) he was wrong and must give me a refund he point blank refused.
Like FK, they sent me a gift card and told me to keep the product as well so the branch lost more by their refusal and the Manager was reported.
I just don't understand though how the branch staff can do this. OK, so they made a mistake and misinterpreted a rule - how can they refuse to comply when HO phone to tell them of their error? The branch staff seem to think they have the power to over-rule a HO decision and do what they like. I have never known a company like it.
It didn't bother me - I had a DTD of over 100%, a full refund and then the product to sell on Ebay too so I was happy but the arrogance of the CS Manager was something to behold. If you're not scared, you're not paying attention0 -
This I did not know, always thought I had to wait for a golden to get any sort of refund. How do you approach this with a receipt that has been written on and then you'll want a refund for an amount less than that on the receipt?
Is this process written anywhere and do people do this often?
It is not one for the faint of heart and (as you will have already read) the branch staff often don't agree with it or don't like to give it so you may have an argument on your hands but it is a HO policy to refund items that have been DTDed so a phone call sorts it out. It can raise your profile a little with the branch though so choose your battles carefully.
If you pay £20 for a £10 item you will get a £20 DTD. That is part refund for the over-payment and part apology/compensation - it does not mean you have had a refund. If you take the item back you are still entitled to a refund of £10.
That said, your original receipt is for £20 and the item still probably scans at £20 so often the staff get it wrong and will refund £20 if a refund is requested.
Some people interpret the rule to be that you are entitled to a £20 refund but I don't agree. I think you would be entitled to a £10 refund (and this is what I have been sent previously by HO) but if they incorrectly give me £20 I just smile and say 'thank you'.
To me, the benefit of a golden is that there need be no debate or discussion and (using the example above) you would definitely get £20 as this is the amount on the receipt. If you're not scared, you're not paying attention0 -

Thank you, fourp. You were well and truly toasted, hope that you enjoyed your Guiness(s).
Thanks to all of the other well wishers.
Highlight of my birthday was when my nine month old DGD played her first 'teasing trick' - reaching out for my hand with her right hand, then pretending to give me her mini breadstick with her left hand before taking it away again and then giggling! She did this over and over again. Then she did it again with my DS. Absolute magic for me, especially when she was so poorly a week ago.0 -
