Don't post often but something to say to Miffy.
My Dad passed away at Christmas and the funeral was 2 weeks ago, all 3 of us me, Bro and Sis planned to do a reading . . I was the only one to go thru with it and it was hard !
If you think it will be too emotional then don't do it, everyone will understand, a Friend stepped in at the last mo and held my hand whilst I was there . . hardest thing I've done but was proud to do it.

Miffy: If you don't think you will make it , have a short one ready. I like the one Joyce Genfell wrote.......
If I should go before the rest of you - Break not a flower nor inscibe a stone, Nor when I'm gone speak in a Sunday voice, But be the usual selves that I have known.
Weep if you must, Parting is hell, But life goes on, So sing as well.

Or for a longer one -
What is dying? I stand upon a seashore, a ship spreads out her white sails to the morning breeze, and heads across the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength, and I stand and watch her until at last she hangs like a speck of white cloud on the horizon just where the sea and sky meet to mingle with each other. At my side someone says, "There, she's gone."
Gone where? Gone from my sight - that is all. She is just as large in mast and spar and hull as when we sailed close by, and just as able to bear her living freight to the place of destination. Her diminished size is in my vision alone. At the moment someone says "There, she's gone," other eyes are watching her coming and other voices take up the shout, "Here she comes!"
    And that is dying.

    Just 2 possibilities.
I believe that friends are quiet angels
Who lift us to our feet when our wings
Have trouble remembering how to fly.

    Thanks melymay
I really want to do it even though I know I will be emotional. I am used to speaking in public and often used to read at church when I went so I know I can do it. I've been looking at readings on the internet and it's making me cry just looking.
Thanks monnagran those are both lovely I'd come across the Joyce Grenfell one on my search.

Miffy - I had this read at my mum's funeral (couldn't have done it myself) Hope you find something that you think is suitable ((hugs))

You can shed tears that she is gone

You can shed tears that she is gone
Or you can smile because she has lived.

You can close your eyes and pray that she’ll come back
Or you can open your eyes and see all that she’s left.

Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her
Or you can be full of the love you shared.

You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday
Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.

You can remember her and only that she’s gone
Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.

You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back
Or you can do what she’d want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on.

    Miffy,
I did the 'reading' at Church for about 10 years, but doing it in the face of all you know is different . . My friend Paul was by my side and that helped . . hope you find peace from the service . . .I have my Dads Internment tomorrow and am having a wobble as to going or not . . My Mum would like me to be there but I don't want to go thru another 'loss'

    Hi Miffy

My Dad died just before Christmas, he was not religious so we had a non religious ceremony at the crematorium. My BIL was the only one who spoke, he did not do a reading, just some memories we had all put together. Me and my sister knew that we would not be able to do a reading or speak.

We had a lovely celebrant who read out this poem at the end

When I come to the end of the road,
And the sun has set for me,
I want no rites in gloom-filled rooms,
Why cry for a soul set free?

Miss me a little--but not too long,

    And not with your head bowed low;
Remember the love that we once shared

    Miss me--but let me go.

For this is a journey that we all must take,
    And each must go alone.
It's all a part of the Master's plan,
A step on the road to home.
When you are lonely and sick at heart,
Go to the friends we know,
And busy your sorrows in doing good deeds.

Miss me - but let me go.

Yep, it made me cry buckets but I liked it.

Happy Burns night to all our friends in Scotland:wave:

bargainbird I am so glad my two are past school age - they used to get the wee blighters all the time :( I have to watch DH now because he works in a lower school, even though he has a Cadfael haircut now :p he also has a beard so I check him all the time, which makes our two roar with laughter :rotfl::rotfl:
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones that let in the light
