I was actually in tears at the programme there. Was one pit bull who hadn't bit anyone but was put down as it was deemed a dangerous dog. Poor dog was only a young thing, 6months I think.

    :(

I only caught the last 10 minutes or so of this programme (Death Row Dogs) and I too was in tears at the end when that young dog was put to sleep.

I can't understand why dogs like this one are not allowed to be rehomed. They aren't allowed to be returned to their current owner because of neglect/living in poor conditions but they are not dangerous so why destroy a perfectly healthy dog.

I didn't realise this programme was repeated later on that night so planned to watch it on BBC iPlayer, I just haven't have the chance so I will be watching it tomorrow - tissues at the ready.

  • I agree that any breed of dog can be dangerous in the wrong hands, not just the banned breeds.

However, accepting as we must that there are plenty of idiots around who are the 'wrong hands' the law was brought in to try to ensure they can't get those hands on certain breeds who have the capacity to cause the most damage should they turn on someone.

Pit bulls' bites are more powerful than other dog breeds. That's why they are banned.

It stops those 'wrong hands' getting hold of what they turn into a dangerous weapon.

It also stops the 'right hands' getting those breeds, true. That may not be fair, but it's worth it to stop the 'wrong hands'.

I don't believe anyone has the right to own one specific breed - what, if I can't have a pitbull I'm going to stamp and cwy and cwy and cwy until I'm sick.Alright Violet Elizabeth, just get another breed.:rotfl:

And when you ban "bull-type" dogs (not to mention the difficulties of identifying actual dogs of type - well demonstrated in the years since the DDA came into place and with ludicrous situations like half of litters being deemed "of type" and the other half ok) - what happens next?

Round here it would be Huskies as the next status dog... or German Shepherds... or Rotties - ban those next? Then what happens when they move onto, oh, say Dobermans (note I'm picking these dogs out as the usual "something must be done" suspects and I actually have a massive soft spot for lots of these breeds - I'm not at all prejudiced against them). Then they move onto Lurchers and sighthound types for going after rabbits - ban them, and where would you draw the line at Lurcher-type since that by nature is a cross-breed anyway... then they decide to go for more terriers...

The idiot brigade will own badly trained dogs of whatever type the current fad is. You ban one - and conduct a genocide of its breed - they'll go onto another and another and another. I know some beautifully trained and behaved Staffy-type dogs, and I know some complete flipping nightmare spaniels and labradors... the problem is on the opposite end of the lead, and sadly we ain't allowed to euthanise idiot humans.

  • It broke my heart when Tyson was put to sleep. I was really hoping they wouldn't show it. I couldn't look. But was in tears anyway.

Absolute myth (along with "locking jaws")!

It clearly doesn't though does it? If it did the BBC would have had big problems making the programme

I'm not sure this actually qualifies as a sensible statement.

It was very sad, despite the conditions he was kept in (not to mention the owner) he was as placid as any dog I've seen & would have made a good pet for responsible owners!

As they say... the law is an !!!!

I didn't see the programme. I did see the mother of a dead child being interviewed on BBC news. Her four year old was killed by his uncle's pit bull. Apparently he had grown up with the dog who was described as a softie or something similar. I cried at the thought of the awful death that child had.

I have just watched this on BBC iPlayer since I only caught the last ten minutes or so when it was on TV. I had to turn it off just as they were about to sedate Tyson or I would be in tears again. Tyson wasn't actually a pit bull was he? He wasn't allowed to return to his owner because she was banned from keeping animals or am I getting mixed up with the other pup that was living in filth in the shed?

I too didn't think they would have filmed Tyson being put to sleep. Kind of reminded me of the film 'Marley & Me', I was in tears at the end of that film and even said to OH 'Aww they should not have filmed that bit, it's too upsetting'.

Lots of us are able to feel compassion for both children AND animals.

I get very upset at the violence human beings subject each other to, including our children, we aren't such a wonderful species.

I love my dog, I have had dogs all my life although I have rescues and none of them have been identifiable as any particular breed, just loveable characters. However, as much as I loved them all I can't justify putting a child at risk of a horrible death, and it must have been absolutely terrifying (the childs grandmother was admitted to hospital with the injuries she got trying to save the poor little soul.) The mother said her brother has never got over it. I thought it was very touching that she said it hasn't affected their relationship, I think it would be easy for a mother to blame the dogs owner and never forgive them.
