Ok, here's the thing. Its not the breed that has the issue, its the humans and banning breeds doesn't make the issues go away so its a pointless exercise.

They banned pitbulls so the idiots get staffies.

If you ban staffies the idiots will get rotties.

If you ban rotties the idiots will get GSDs.

If you ban GSDs the idiots will get Huskies.

If you ban Huskies the idiots will get mastiffs.

If you get mastiffs the idiots will get Great Danes.

If you ban Great Danes the idiots will get Shar Peis.

    etc etc etc.

Do you see where I'm going with this? ;)

I can see where you're going with this, but the ultimate result is if you remove the ban instead of seeing loads of Staffies we'll see loads of Pit Bulls with people who can't control them, even more back street breeding of them, so even more of the idiots can own them.

I think we need to be realistic or we'll get legislation like Germany with this list of restricted dogs:

    Cat.1) Banned Breeds

    American Staffordshire Terrier

    Pitbull Terrier

    Staffordshire Bull Terrier

    Bull Terrier

    Neopolitan Mastiff

    Spanish Mastiff

    Dogue de Bordeux

    Dogo Argentino

    Fila Brasileiro

    Roman Fighting Dog

    Chinese Fighting Dog

    Bandog

    Tosa Inu

Cat.2) Breeds with restrictions placed on ownership breeding etc

    Akbash

    Briard

    Beauceron

    Bullmastiff

    Dobermann

    Estrela Mountain Dog

    Komondor

    Kuvasz

    Maremma

    Mastiff

    Pyrenean Mastiff

    Pyrenean Mountain Dog

    Rottweiler

    Tibetan Mastiff

and 15 other European herding breeds

And the EU have move afoot to harmonise German restrictions across the EU

All dogs can be dangerous, it isn't so much the dogs to blame as their owners. As far as I am aware, Pit Bulls were specifically bred for fighting, which is why it appears they are singling out the Pit Bull over other dogs.

A dog cannot help what breed it is, nor can it help what it is bred to do. Those who train such breeds to kill, should themselves be put down or made to face a pack of them in a cage.

One of the issues with Pit bull terriers is that they are more likely to cause severe harm if they attack. Its not only the jaw strength its the way the Pit bull bite that is the difference to other breeds. The "Hold and Shake" bite style.

All dogs 'hold and shake', even my toy poodle does that.

The reason there are still Pit Bulls in this country is that the law refers to dogs of 'Pit Bull' type. There are various measurements and guidelines (sorry, I don't know exactly what they) to define an illegal dog which means that a xbreed ie staff x a longer legged breed can easily be judged to be that type. In those cases the court may allow you to keep your dog, usually after temperament tests under very strict conditions.

As someone who has a rottie I have to admit that I'm very anti breed specific legislation for obvious reasons although I would support stricter laws as long as they applied to all dogs and owners (as more often than not it's the owner that is the problem!)

Agree with this..apart from idiots owning Shar peis lolol :p:D

It was really hard to watch that but they are right to highlight the problems with the Act.

Seeing as the Shar Pei was originally bred as a fighting dog, and the folds were encouraged as it made severe wounding from bites less likely, are you sure about this?

One lived round the corner from me when I was in a council flat. Definitely an idiot - she bred full SPs for the money and crossed with Bull types for the 'other' market. Mid to late 1990s, and I think it was also to increase the incidence of 'blues' in the 'other' market.
