Move from Eon to first utility?
Hi,
My previous tariff with Eon (SaveOnline 4) ended last weekend and I have just been placed on their standard energy plan.
I called them up and was advised to switch to the SaveOnline 11 plan instead which would save me £94 per year...great (I thought!)
Just done a check on moneysupermarket and I can save a further £91 on top of that by moving to firstutility.
Has anyone had experience of them or can recommend an alternative provider better than the Eon SaveOnline 11?

Read the reviews. It looks like a great deal but the very large deferred discount puts me and many others off.:footie:
Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S)
Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money.

Well that depends on which specific tariff. If it is the one I think it is that has, as HappyMJ points out, the largest "deferred discount" going. Beware "deferred discount" if you don't understand the circumstances you could forfeit the discount (thereby invalidating your comparison).
Even though there are curently no stonking discounts for fixing, my advice has been and remains to consider a fix over the (next) winter heating season. Most people buy insurance on an annual cost basis. Never understood the reluctance to fix energy unit prices for a year.0 -
In that case I think I may go with the Eon SaveOnline 11 unless anyone can recommend anything better as I know some places offer cashback for switching?0

Just had another check - the SaveOnline11 offers:
Electricity
Normal units up to 900 kWhs per year
24.234 pence
Normal units
11.855 pence per kWh
Gas
Normal units up to 2680 kWhs per year
8.127 pence
Normal units
3.468 pence per kWh
Whereas the 'New Energy Fixed' tariff from OVO is:
Electricity unit prices
standing charge (per year) £105.00
All kWh 9.345p per kWhGas unit prices
standing charge (per year) £84.00
All kWh 3.255p per kWh
How can they be so different and has anyone had a good experience with them?
Thanks again.0 -

There is no need to micro-calculate the unit price. Let the comparison website do that for you and post the headline annual costs for your typical annual consumption.
Then the question can be answered.0 -

This is what the comparison website came up with:
Based on what you have told us we have calculated the following:
Gas usage per year
16500 kWhElec. usage per year
3300 kWh
Your current deal costs around
£91.98per month
This deal will cost you around
£86.21per month
You save
£5.77 per month
£69.28 per year
Our current monthly DD with Eon has just been increased to £94 per month but this whilst on our old tariff.0 -
Also worth bearing in mind that Eon's price "reduction" hasn't filtered into the figures yet ... I think their reps said the new prices will be on their web site and comparison sites on the 27th ... though need to wait and see what happens to saveonline as I think they could stay the same (or, I think, even increase slightly!) and still maintain the "at least 2% lower than standard tarrif" promise.
N.b. when I first switched providers several years ago First Utility came up at the top of the charts but in the end I decided to go for one of the "big" providers who were slightly more expensive .... since then I've read sufficient comments from FU customers to feel very relieved that I took that decision!0 -

Forgotten what the question was but doing a quick check the OVO New Energy Fixed tariff appears to be about 5% cheaper than E.ON SaveOnline 11.
Fixed (for 12 months) or not fixed is up to you. Personally I advocate the "peace of mind" advantages of a fix. The OVO New Energy Fixed tariff looks OK.0 -
I've decided to switch from Eon to OVO's New Energy Tariff - what have I got to lose for trying it for 12 months?
How will it work - we are currently £200+ in credit with Eon, our next monthly DD payment is due to them on 1st Feb and our next quarterly billing date is 6th Feb.
I don't want to pay on the 1st Feb then change and also have to pay upfront with OVO.0 -

Good choice I think, however things will not happen so quickly that you will be shot of E.ON by 1 Feb. The process takes about 4 - 6 weeks after submitting your switch, so best let the 1 Feb payment through.
The thing to do is make sure you have provided a customer read for 6 Feb then check your credit balance. Once you have been notified of the start date is the time to engage with E.On if you want the Direct Debit to stop. Before you cancel the dd mandate find out whether E.ON pay any credit balance by cheque or by direct credit to the dd account.0
