  • I once texted a colleague 26 times at midnight about 2 students arriving the next day - I only actually texted once of course. And I sent it at 6pm at night.

    More than likely a glitch - so perhaps be nice to them and say that unfortunately the Job Centre got it wrong.
    If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.

    Ok the 13 times thing was probably a glitch and I worked out there was a problem with the advert and that was why we got a lot of odd applications this time.

    But we always get a few really strange ones really obviously just ticking boxes about how many jobs they applied for at the jobcentre. How do we feel about ignoring those and not wasting further time on them - they can't possibly have been expecting to get anywhere. As in seriously not a single thing about them matches the job.

    heretolearn, it isn't always a box ticking exercise for the applicant, but rather a box ticking exercise for the jobcntre advisor who 'directed' them to apply for the job in which case they do not have a choice, whether or not they are clearly not qualified.

    Advertising through the jobcentre means numerous unsuitable applications coming your way I'm afraid, but also (hopefully) several good candidates too.

    Are you sure they didn't do that because it potentially was going to isolate or exclude groups of potential applicants, which may be interpreted as discrimination and against the law?
    eg asking for a specific UK qualification or asking for a qualification that was OTT for the post, which would eliminate any young applicants
    I recently applied for a job and got an interview because I was able to demonstrate the skills required for the job even though I didn't have the "essential" qualification - as a carer it hadn't been possible for me to have gained the qualification so I said so on the application

    Do you check ALL the ads that appear, perhaps they are badly written in the first place?

    if people apply that clearly do not meet the specification, I do not generally reply. I estimate 80-90% of applicants were like that in my last recruitment drive.

    Ah - mystery as to why we were getting so many peculiar ones this time round solved - I double checked the online jobcentre advert. They'd decided to add some statutory wording nonsense at the start and finish of our ad, and made space for this did this by randomly cutting bits out - totally changing the meaning in some places and it was not at all clear what the job required. *sigh* re-done it now, with their stat bits left in. They'd even cut out the required qualification for goodness sake!:mad:
    Job centre adverts are 95% wrong and badly worded and sometimes all the wrong contact info and companies never reply anyway.

    This may be of use when I have reported certain jobs the JCP tell me they are typed WORD FOR WORD how the employer wants the advert to read. I find that VERY hard to believe as there are so many mistakes on adverts I have applied to.

    I find it suprising you go back to the ones you arent taking to interview. Most adverts I see say things like 'If you dont hear from us in x time assume you have bene unsuccessful.'
  • When people have gone to the time and trouble to prepare a CV and send it in, is it any wonder they are reluctant to apply to other employers if they don't receive any communication at all? If this rudeness doesn't abate, I can see there being one almighty backlash against employers when they least expect it and of a magnitude employers won't be expecting or be able to deal with.

    There is a rule in the Universe - what goes around, comes around. And whether employers like it or not, they have got to change their attitudes towards prospective employees as well as existing employees. If they don't, either existing and prospective employees will migrate to employers who treat them like human beings or take over businesses and run them as workers co-operatives. The writing is on the wall. Any employer who ignores it does so at their peril.

    If only...

    A more immediate point: today's applicant may well be tomorrow's customer. A company that manages to give even a single useful sentence as constructive feedback to every unsuccessful applicant will probably do more to create a positive brand image than could be achieved by any PR agency.
