Kate - I'd been thinking about stocking up on those loo rolls at Costco. I'm down to the last 24 (6 packs) of the previous. I've been trying to avoid Costco as it is my favourite shop ever and I become a woman possessed as soon as I enter however 24 toilet rolls could be gone very quickly so maybe I should stock up. Maybe I can get round the shop without buying anything else:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I was down to my last 20 or so and was in full on panic mode as they had not had the offer on for so long :o

Costco is a dangerous place to go; we spent £240 (only bought what was on the list okay and 5l of olive oil) but not all is for us, we buy for our familise as well, and we used the cashback Amex so that's a whopping £1.20 back :)

Pusscat is all better today thankfully!

FTM, got enough on my hands with my own windows but thanks for the offer :) My dad, who used to be a window cleaner, took one look at our huge plate glass, aluminium-framed windows when we moved in and started muttering about how "that's 320 corners to clean" :rotfl:

OH is packing, he's just decided he would like me to wash the jeans which I offered to do earlier today so they are in WM and will have to TD them in the morning so they are ready before he goes. Will miss him like mad while he's away but really looking forward to being able to go to bed at 9.00 every night :) I'm an early to bed early to rise type, he's more night owl!

Mrs LW, I am trying to get more veggie based meals into our diet as I like pulses and beans; I made dal for lunch but it was a bit bland so need more practise. Will experiment over the next few days so I can find some meals OH will like as he is a confirmed carnivore. He has discovered he likes chickpeas though (preferably with sausages :rotfl:).

We have a good freezer-full of food, including meat, but need to eke it out as much as possible.
  • Morning KATEP you could combine the two and make Chickpea Sausages there is a wartime recipe for lentil sausages which would be fine using chickpeas I have if that would be any use? I also have a super recipe for Lemon Dahl I can give if that would be useful. I chuck any veg I have lurking into that as well and He Who Knows loves it, let me know. Todays experiment in the culinary arts is going to be Mixed Vegetable Pakoras as I have some Gram Flour to use up and I've just been through my Indian Cook Books and found a decent sounding recipe, I'll let you know if they work and post the recipe if you'd like that too, Cheers Lyn xxx.

Hi KATEP the original recipe is for Lentil Sausages but I'm
certain that any pulse including Chickpeas can be substituted. The original recipe sounds bland so I would be inclined to add in some herbs and spices to make it more acceptable to the modern palate. 4oz of dried pulses cooks up to the equivalent of 1 450/500g tin so you would need 3/4 of a can of beans/chichpeas.

    Lentil Sausages - makes 8

3oz of split red lentils (dry weight) cooked in water with a chopped leek or onion and some fresh sage and plenty of seasoning (if you are using canned beans/chickpeas I would cook the leek/onion to softness in some oil and keep some of the canning liquid to use for consistency adjustment).
    1 tablespoon soya flour
    some chopped parsley
8 oz very smooth mashed potato
    1 egg beaten
    fine breadcrumbs for coating.

Miz well the pureed pulses with leeks herbs abd seasoning, soya flour, parsley and mashed potato. Add any other herbs and spices you might like. Form into 8 sausage shapes and coat firstly in beaten egg then breadcrumbs, If you have enough of both lkeft coat twice, helps hold the shape better. Rest in the fridge for 30 mins and then fry, grill of bake until golden brown.

    Lemon Dahl

6 oz dry split red lentils
    1 pint water
    2 tablespoons margaring/ghee
    1 onion, sliced
1 clove garlic peeled and crushed
    1 teaspoon groung coriander
    1 teaspoon ground ginger
    1 teaspoon ground turmeric
    1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
    1/2 tin chopped tomatoes
    the juice of a lemon
2 tablespoons chopped fresh coriander leaves
salt and fresh ground black pepper

Put lentils into a saucepan with the water and cook until soft and broken down.Heat the margarine/ghee in a heavy based frying pan and saute the onion and garlic in it for 5 minutes stir in the spices and cook gently for another 5 minutes. Add to the lentils along with the tomatoes and lemon juice and cook 5 minutes stirring over a gently heat. Season to taste and add coriander leaf at the end of the cooking time. If you are going to use any extra veg, cook them beforehand and add in at the end with the tomatoes. Serve with rice or chappaties and enjoy

Hope they are useful, Cheers Lyn xxx.

Evening all. Well, the fact that I'm posting at 10pm on a Saturday night shows what a rock and roll lifestyle I lead nowadays:o

The weather here is atrocious - not a huge amount of snow but the wind is so strong it's blown the snow across the open fields and we have an 8ft drift at the gate:eek: even my dirty great 4x4 can't handle that so father or hubby will have to get the JCB out first thing tomorrow to dig me out.
Don't know if it was because I knew we were "trapped" but I made a huge pot of veggie soup tonight, some HM bread and a batch of empire biscuits. I so need to go to Costco as I'm now out of glace cherries, icing sugar and many more things however next weekend is Easter so it may not be the best time to go.

I had a bit of a disaster a few weeks back with my lovely white damask linen tablecover - one accident too many and the stains would not come out so it's now in 20+ pieces for hubby to use as dusters. I'm thinking I may not buy a replacement right now but just use a white flat sheet (I'm having dinner guests for the next 2 weekends) - do you think that would be ok? I can throw a table runner over it to detract from the fact that it's just a sheet. Actually I'm thinking if I pop into Mr A tomorrow I can probably get a white double sheet for next to nothing and if it only lasts for a few dinners it won't be the end of the world.

Kate - hope pusscat has continued to improve. We don't have any pets however when hubby opened the back door one morning this week there was quite a bit of snow and a little set of kitty paw prints all the way to the back door, round about and back down the steps and eventually across my orchard to the field. We guessed it was one of the farm cats out hunting (as they do at night) although I was a bit upset that it must have been really cold and hungry to venture to the door. Hubby is a little more hard hearted though and didn't quite share my concern:)

I am worried about my semi tame hare and wonder if I should throw some green veggies in the field for him. Then again maybe not - my father constantly lectured my sister and I about not interfering with nature - sometimes it is hard though:o

Anyway off to see what I can catch on TV as I hear snores from the den which means the remote control is unattended and all mine - yaay!
    NO FARMS = NO FOOD

Just had this for lunch and it was lovely so thank you very much :D

Pusscat is all better thanks SM, I think he must have had a bad mouse ;)

Had animal-related fun reently while OH was away - the brother of the cat who was poorly managed to get not one but two ticks  Surely it's too early for them. Had to deal with them myself for the first time, OH always does the removing and I do the holding / pinning down.

Then managed to get hold of our drake who was limping and found a bit of stick or thorn in his foot so had to remove that. Why do these things happen when I am on my own?

Ducks are laying well at the moment, we are regularly getting 6 / 7 and the other day they all laid so we got 9!! (Had porridge for breakfast this morning as I couldn't face eggs today!)

We're going to London on Saturday to see OH's favourite blues guitarist at the Royal Albert Hall (standing tickets, my feet are going to kill by the end of the night!)

We are debating whether to get the train or drive - I'm leaning towards the latter if we can get parked as we won't be eating out before (which we would normally do) or drinking so there is no benefit to the train and it will cost about £30 for both of us plus £10 for the bus to the train station.

Looking forward to a night out though!

The in laws are coming over for Sunday lunch this weekend and we are having roast turkey which my mum got reduced from £40 to £9 on Christmas Eve.
  • Hello KATEP gald you enjoyed the Dahl, I have another recipe which I've adapted from several to suit our tastes that you might like, it's gentle comfort food for cold days

    African Beans

8 oz dry weight mixed beabs ( butterbeans, black eyed beans, chick peas, red kidney beans and aduki beans) soaked and cooked or 2 x 450/500 gram tins of mixed beans
    2 medium onions chopped
    2 tablespoons cooking oil
1 can of tomato paste (135g)
    1 can coconut milk (410g)
    1 teaspoon paprika
    1 teaspoon hot paprika
    1/2 teaspoon chilli powder
    1/2 teaspoon cumin
    2 teaspoons brown sugar
    1 teaspoon salt
    black pepper

Cook beans or drain cans, saute onion in oil until soft and transparent. Add all other ingredients, bring to the simmer and cook gently for 15 minutes.

We had it with some cornbread, but rice or flatbreads wouild be just as nice. Hope you like it, Cheers Lyn xxx.

  • Hi FTM we are all very well thank you, no snow here but bitterly cold and today lots of tiny flakes blowing around in the air, not enough to settle, but it gives the dockling dandruf whenever we go out, well that's what it looks like!!! My lovely eldest girlie is home for a few days over easter and it is so very nice to have her here, she's going to be thoroughly spoiled as the last term has been intense in every way and she is tired out, so mum will feed her and rest her and take her for walkies with the lurcher if she's really good girl!!! Have a happy easter everyone and I hope the easter bunny leaves you lots and lots of chocolate eggs, Cheers Lyn xxx.
