Hi all...
MLW..your doggy has the right idea..i would love to strectch out in front of the fire.
SM..at last it turns up..let me know what it turns out like..
We have had a few foggy damp days..i mean thick fog..its been cold too..not had heating on uet though..the house seems to hold the temp at between 19-20 degrees..and tots bedroom is at 22...so our efforts at heat loss are paying off...
My poor OH is suffering from a bad cold and sore throat..he is sat on his laptop all bundled up with a hot cuppa..
Me and the girls have spent some vouchers we got sent..we went to the book store and got a few..nice to get something and it was free..we did get "Little House in the woods" by Laura Ingalls Wilder..they were silent when i read the first chapter to them..also a copy of Danny Champion of the world..amazing books and i must admit i am really enjoying reading them again too.
We had a slow day today..Fern is doing subtractions and is slowly getting it..poor child she tries so hard..yet seems to flourish at anything to do with words, reading and writing..going to try and jazz up the math lessons for her..so any ideas would be gratefully recieved.
got to go hubby looks like he might keel over lol..
love

not a regular on this thread, but just saw your maths problem
I'm not sure how old your DD is but with my 4 yr old we just mix it in with everyday stuff (although I know you're HSing).
eg. 10 grapes, eat 3 count how many are left. cut a piece of bread into 4 to go with soup and ask her to give half to her sister.
sort out the crayon box into coloured groups, which colour group is biggest, estimate how many red crayons there are.
I seem to remember you do a lot of baking with your family. cut butter into 1oz cubes, but cut a few too many for the recipe and get her to takeaway the correct amount.
I expect you already do these, or certainly similar things anyway. my dd's are not natural mathematicians either, both prefer letters and words. hth xxfreecycler and skip diver extraordinnaire:cool:0 -
Morning everyone, cold and grey today and damp but not raining until later on. Feels very autumnal and we are lighting the stove every afternoon. Had a lovely visit to DD1 to look after the Pinnypig while she was away in Europe taking a school trip and then had a couple of days with her when she got back. She has a little open fire in her lounge which was lovely to have going in the evening, I am sending her our chestnut roaster as we don't use it with the woodstove, and she loves roasted chestnuts. Slightly concerned for DD2 who is currently on holiday in Washington DC and they are expecting some disruption from Hurricane Sandy and a winter storm colliding in that area. She's due to fly on Wednesday, hope things are not as disruptive as predicted.
SM - Glad your Ice Cream Maker has finally arrived, just in time for the really cold weather!!!!!NICE!!!!!
FTM - Hope your DH is feeling much better now and that none of the rest of you have caught the cold. Hope you can come up with some ideas for the maths. Will have a chat with DD1 who teached and see if she can get some ideas from the Maths Department for you.
Stay warm and dry everyone and have a good week, Cheers Lyn xxx.0 -
Evening all. I'm a bit ashamed to say I've been MIA a bit recently - my laptop soujorns have been largely early Christmas preparations (although I haven't bought anything yet) and research for bits and pieces so I haven't been on the OS thread much.
After my impatience to get the ice cream attachment I haven't yet used it however.... I do have my Christmas cake made and stored away ready for weekly feeding so I haven't been completely unproductive. I've also made a CS trip which cleared 7 skirts, 2 evening outfits, 8 tops, 4 pairs of shoes and 6 unopened DVD's from my cupboards. All in excellent condition so I hope a few people benefit from them and I now have more space which I'm not intending to refill.
I did have a moment's weakness and placed a Lakeland order at the weekend - most of it mundane things however my impulse buy was a rolling pin which has stars impressed upon it and makes a pattern when you roll across fondant icing. Given that my Christmas cake is always topped with royal icing to look like snow I'm not sure what I was thinking about:o Smooth, wrinkle free fondant icing doesn't come easily to me - I must have a look on Youtube to see if there are any tutorials there which would help.
Tonight I'm making rice krispie ghosts for my SIL - she is a teaching assistant and her school is having a themed halloween day on Wednesday so I have been drafted in to help. I'm off to see what other !!!!!ish treats I can make - all good fun:)
MrsLW - hope your daughter stays safe. I think the effects of the storm may hang over into Wednesday in terms of flights etc however at least there seem to be plenty preparations in place ahead of the impact so fingers crossed disruption is as minimal as possible.0 -
SM - Lakeland don't sell mundane things, only really NECESSARY things you really need!!!!!
Have heard from DD2 in New York and they are all fine, still have electricity and mains water and are staying with friends. They called off the trip to Washington DC because of the hurricane warning and were fine last night despite all the weather could throw at them. Apparently they had a small mountain of Hershey Bars, lots of beer and some board games - Priorities eh? Now we have to wait and see if the flight they are booked on tomorrow night actually flys, if not they are in the re-booking queue with everyone else.
Hope your rice crispie ghosts were a success, Cheers Lyn xxx.0 -
Oh MrsLw, glad your daughter is safe.
I'm glad I've never put in a lakeland order. Frankly, by the time I have filled my basket with what I want from the site, I don't have enough money to order that goods, so I delete it all again. Were I rich, I'd be lethal!
We saw the kitchenaid stand mixers when we were out in Florida. I couldn't believe the price of them. $199- that's way less than over here! DH said I should get one but I don't know if I could run it from a plug converter. If I was able to clarify that, then I would definately consider it!
Halloween now, have sister and her boy coming later on today so I will get about 3 hours sleep after my night shift before I am up and preparing kidlets for halloween!
We were discussing trick or treating at the weekend, DH was almost considering getting some sweets to give neighbours so the kids could knock. I said no. It's such a faff when kids come round as you let all of your heat out opening the door every 5 minutes. The odd ocaision we've had them, they've had awful manners too.

Hi KAZ, thanks very much, we are so relieved to have heard from them and it even looks as if JFK Airport might be running a limited service today so there is a very slight chance that she might be very lucky and get home, we'll see!!
Hope all is sorted out for you after having had your bag stolen, and that you are over the worst of the distress, so horrid!
I've got some Halloween goodies, it's a village convention to start the proceedings early just as it is getting dark for the very littlies and their parents and we don't go on much after 7.30 but the convention is that kids don't knock on houses without a lit Pumpkin in the window, and they mostly stick to it. There is so very little else for them to do here, I love the effort they make with the costumes and it gives me pleasure to give them a treat, Cheers Lyn xxx.0 -
DD2 safely home and back to her home, now peacefully tucked up and asleep after a very long day and night - One very relieved Mum here, now I have to go visit on her very next free day - I NEED A HUG!!!!! Cheers Lyn xxx.0

So glad she's home now, I bet you're very relieved!
We're about to do our menu plan now as I'm still sobbing around in pj's. Halloween was a complete washout here, by the time we went to the event,is was cancelled. The only people left were the ones selling all those lights. We couldn't even get out of the car park initially, a big hooha about it being open until 9 and then there was no way out as they shut the shopping centre!Debt: 16/04/2007:TOTAL DEBT [strike]£92727.75[/strike] £49395.47:eek:   £43332.28 repaid 100.77% of £43000 target.MFiT T2: Debt [STRIKE]£52856.59[/STRIKE] £6316.14 £46540.45 repaid 101.17% of £46000 target.2013 Target: completely clear my [STRIKE]£6316.14[/STRIKE] £0 mortgage debt. £6316.14 100% repaid.0 -
MrsLW - so glad your DD made it home ok. It's not fun out there at the moment - I deal with people in NYC on a daily basis so they have been updating me - one of them placed his vote today in a tent which had been set up as a polling station. I'm sure you were probably more worried than she was though -I recall being in Texas when Hurricane Wilma was heading for us, hard on the heels of Katrina, and being quite unconcerned as things were well organised. When I got home I realised how frantic my mother had been although she didn't give any hint of it when we spoke. I guess it doesn't matter how old or worldy wise we are our mums still worry about us:o
Kaz - Halloween was a bit of a damp squib here too - as was Guy Fawkes - I only saw 2 bonfires and I don't think they counted as they were local farmers. They use Nov 5th as a great opportunity to burn rubbish and things which they probably shouldn't as it just appears to be another bonfire. My father didn't have one this year, we must be saving up all the junk for a bumper one next year!0
