What do you actually want advice on?
A way to grab the money, but leave the door open for a future claim should the infection return/worsen?
  • The OP agrees to the amount of compensation but will not sign for it, and has not said why

I have said why Regularsaver - I disagree with it. the bank have admitted they made a mistake which resulted in me not being able to access my money while away [this bit is clear]. they have offered compensation which I am happy with [this bit is also clear]. they want me to sign a disclaimer that the medical infection I contracted is not their fault, which I have agreed with in writing to them, as it is not their fault I caught a bladder infection. They want to take this a step further and want me to agree that it is not their fault that I couldnt get medical treatment for it while away. this is the bit I disagree with, if I could have got to my money, I could have paid the medical bill and got treatment. the fact that I couldnt get to my money, directly due to an error that the bank have admitted to prevented treatment. That is why I wont sign their disclaimer. There is not much chance of me putting in a further claim either at a later date, the infection has completely cleared up now and I am happy to put it behind me.

Thanks Clive Woody, at last a post that is not judgmental. I am happy with the level of compensation offered, even though it only covers the chance to return to Cameroon [minus the time I would have to take off as an unpaid leave from work]. I am even ok with the banks refusal to accept responsibilty for anything else. What I am not happy with is that the bank will not give me the compensation unless I sign a full disclaimer that I agree with them.

To be honest I would just sign the form pocket the money (or donate it to the chairty you were taking photographs for) and go and have a beer and forget all about it.

At the end of the day you won't get any compensation for the stress from dithering over whether to sign the form. I would say with some degree of confidence the bank won't change their mind and you getting annoyed serves little purpose.

It's a learning point for future travels, don't trust advice from the bank, in fact with all the smart !!!!!! on here this might be the place to start your research before your next adventure.

  • Unless you purchased travel insurance from the bank. And that travel insurance failed to work as it should, it is unlikely the bank would be found responsible.

Thanks for this. I did purchase insurance from them, and it would have worked could I have got to my money, as I could have claimed it back on my return.

Unless the representative of the bank was a foriegn travel specialist, the advice should not have been taken as gospel. In hindsight you no doubt agree.

Something I will definately keep in mind for the future. As you state, hindsight is a wonderful thing, just wish I has foresight eh.

The bank can not and will not accept liability, as it will open them up to all sorts of other problems.

I understand this, I just wish I had some way of assuring them that I dont want to make any further claim, I just dont agre with them entirely.

I would strongly advise you take legal advice, if you are unwilling to accept.
Well its something I will think about, and thanks for your advice.

This site can not give you advise, nor can the bank, sorry

Why do I get the feeling this is about to degenerate in a Monty Python style thread....

I love your laid back attitude - more of this is what we need.

Your advice was good and I have decided to take it and go for that beer, oh and give some of it to the charity too.

All this talk of debt seems to be stressing some folk out a bit.

As somebody with considerable trolling experience (on a sports website I hasten to add) I can't see the point of trolling on here. I guess some of the regulars get a bit defensive when new folk turn up with opinions of their own.

If you've got money for a pint of beer then life ain't all bad.

Ok, you must help me out here. As I said earlier, I am new to forums and havent used them before. I assumed earlier when called a troll, that I was being called some mythical hairy monster, like an ogre type of thing. Does this troll word have a specific meaning on here then? What is it?
