Bank admission of fault, yet not prepared to put things right

Have to agree that it is not completely the banks fault - they aren't travel agents or travel specialists. It sound like they tried to help you before your journey, but really you should have investigated it in full before you went.... If I wanted advise on access to funds when travelling I think the bank would be one of the last places I would go to...particularly when travelling to an unsual destination....
I think the bank have done all they can in this case....0 -
I found this in less than a minute

Very good, I found this before going too, hence why alerted the bank of where I was going and asked their advice on the best way to access my money. The fact that this site states that the Euro is the easiest currency to exchange, doesnt mean its easy to exchange them. I implore you go over there and try it before making such judgement. Remeber, this is internet research also, the place where you can find images of people who apparently have two heads or something similarly unbelievable. After finding this, and seeing how difficult it can be in Cameroon, where would you have gone next for advice?
What an earth made you think a high street bank would be able to advise you?
Well try contacting the Cameroon Embassy in London, which I did, ask them about it, they will tell you to speak to your bank, which I did. The bank then looked up where I was going and got back to me with the advice on what account to use, what card to take, and even which bank to use it in. Why wouldn't I trust my bank to give me sound advice. I have been with them for 20 years and have not experienced any difficulties with them. I have been loyal to them, and they gave me good advice when I went to Thailand 6 years ago. With this kind of past relationship with the bank, why would I suspect them of not being able to provide proper advice. They deal with all my money matters, why not this one?
It is not further compensation I am after, the bank have offered an extremely generous sum, I do not even want them to admit to anything further, but I do expect that after the apologies they have made, that I should not have to sign to say that I agree with them - if that was the case, why are they apoplogising.
I am not sure why I am still reading these posts. I didnt come in to ask advice on whether the bank was at fault, the bank have already admitted that. If I wanted my apparent inadequacies pointed out, I would have gone to a childrens playground.0 -
Thanks Clive Woody, at last a post that is not judgmental. I am happy with the level of compensation offered, even though it only covers the chance to return to Cameroon [minus the time I would have to take off as an unpaid leave from work]. I am even ok with the banks refusal to accept responsibilty for anything else. What I am not happy with is that the bank will not give me the compensation unless I sign a full disclaimer that I agree with them.Clive_Woody wrote:What level of compensation would you consider to be reasonable?
What are you trying to get the bank to admit liability for?

Have you tried the CAB to see if they can give you more advice - or if you have a family soliciter you could speak to them about the document the bank are asking you to sign....what are the further implications of signing it - if you are accepting the compensation and are happy with the amount you've been offered does it matter about who's originally to blame.
By the way previous post is not judgement - just opinion - when you post on a forum like this it is generally people's opinions you are asking for...:D0 -
Maybe Cameroon was not the best place to go without thorough research
Could you not claim off the travel insurance with the bill for the medical expenses once you returned home?
The British consulate could not help - but you think a bank can?0 -

Oh forgive me - I didnt realise that disagreeing with you made me a spoilt brat!!
Signing a disclaimer is standard practice, but then no doubt you've done research on that as well
Actually no, I havent done any research on that, I know enough to know that I really shouldnt sign something I disagree with - I suppose that makes me spolit as well eh??
Oh well, time to get out of the playground, and here is a wink from me to you as well, just so you can see I am joking with you eh;)0 -
why don't you agree with the compensation they have offered?
did the insurance pay out later upon receipt of the medical bills?0 -

Well I could have done this, only I had no money to pay the medical bill while over there, so there was no medical bill.

Well the bank gave me the advice before going - I thought it was sound. As for them helping while over there, they were useless.0 -
it wasn't advice
you should have checked with travel agent, as banks shouldn't have to give you info about your choice to go abroad, when they are based here0 -
I do agree with the compensation offered, I dont agree that I have to agree with the bank and sign their disclaimer.regularsaver1 wrote:why don't you agree with the compensation they have offered?

There were no medical bills, I couldnt get my money to have the infection treated.0
