Thanks to you super people and your ideas i'm now taking my mum and me to the local national golf course health suite, which is super posh but does a one day pass at very reasonable prices. Dad is going to pick up DD in case we over run on the swimming, jacquizi and sauna, plus reading of mags and books. Mum then suggested we go out for lunch somewhere, i know of a nice little friendly cafe in town which does sarnies and toasties cheaply but tasty. Back in time to pick up DS and DH should be home by 4.30 as its a thursday. Result and all sorted...............
Thanks to everyone for your help, advice, opinions and ideas. It would never have occurred to me to do this, yet its on my doorstep. Silly really, i dont know why, swimming is my thing but since the kids, i've not done it seriously or regularly. Its on my list for september onwards.
Sounds like an excellent day, :bdaycake::bdaycake::bdaycake:0 -
I think it's nice to have a day to celebrate someone you love, not matter what their age. When my husband is here, my birthday and his usually begin with breakfast in bed and then doing something fun with the kids, and then the kids help make a cake or their favourite meal.NSDs 7/20

Is this normal these days?
Sorry but I've grown up with birthdays being special for both kids and adults. Even now I still have gifts to open and it's a special day, I do the same in return to my sortofmum (long story but don't bother with real mum) and now I'm teaching my boyfriend to do the same as he forgot his mums birthday last year! I think it's nice to have one day where it's your special day.0 -
another january birthday here and i have given up trying to do anything special. everyone is broke from xmas so even getting a people to go out for a couple drinks or for a meal is nigh on impossible.
it is just another day. on my actual birthday ill be getting up with the kids and getting big one off to school while i spend the rest of the day with the little one and doing housework then ill be cooking tea and doing the dishes then watching tv till bedtime.0 -
I'm the same. I'm quite bemused by this thread - I don't know anyone who makes a full on fuss of their birthday after the age of about 16!
If my birthday happens to fall on a working day, then I go to work. If it falls on a non-working day, but during the week, then I will be at home doing the housework, and DH will be at work and the children will be at school. If it falls on a weekend, we will probably go to the supermarket! Business as usual here.
The weekend of my birthday, I will arrange a meal out with DH and a bunch of friends. If I want to do that I arrange it, DH arranges it for his birthday, friends arrange it for their own etc. We don't exchange presents, or pay for the birthday boy/girls meal or anything, just go out as a big group for a meal or for a few drinks. Surely spending a night out with friends is celebration/recognition enough? I can't see how which month you were born in makes the least bit of difference?
Anyway, it sounds as though you have plans, so enjoy your birthday. But don't feel bad about other people not making a fuss/taking the day of work etc, that's fairly normal.
My thoughts exactly. It's my 30th birthday (eeeeeek) a week today and I'll be going to work as normal, but having a meal out with OH in the evening. Perhaps a few drinks in the pub with my mates on the following weekend, if they are free.0 -
My birthday is a January one too, it actually fell on the Saturday just gone woohoo !! Anyhoo had to take my little boy to his swimming, shop, clean etc, so I had my birthday yesterday instead. Went over to Hebden Bridge, had a pint, had a lovely walk by the river, twas great. Last year went to the Yorkshire Sculpture Park with my friend, had a long walk and went to cafe for a huge slab of cake. I'm easily pleased. The lovely thing is lots of birthday cash to spend in the sales!!:hello:
