What is a good car for long distance commute
Comments
-
details as below:
48.7 MPG (combined)
for fuel and tax over 3 years (I'm assuming its tax bracket E- £115) Estimating using the same method as before ( assuming you add approx 15% each year for fuel prices)
Ready for this?
Fuel and tax alone: £18,966.000 -
Thought about going down at the beginning of the week, back at the end and staying in B&B or travel lodge etc in between?
would be a whole lot less wear & tear (and probably cheaper) if you could0 -
Vaio makes a very good point,
if you made the journey 1/5th of the time you would be spending £4,250 on tax and fuel. ( almost twice some of the other cars i've mentioned ) but still not worth worrying about so much!0 -
Yes I did think about doing that but on the student loans I will be getting doubt I'd be able to afford it as well as paying for the finance, hard decision to make at this rate I'll have to cycle or worse get the train lol0

OP I would certainly consider staying close to wherever your course is.
I did the long distance commuting thing for several years and it is very wearing. You won't see much of your OH during the week and you are likely to find it very difficult to keep up with the coursework due to tiredness and lack of time.0 -
Yer think you guys are right gonna have to calculate a few things and see if I can afford to rent near nottingham0
-
hang on, where are you driving to and from? I'm not long graduated from uni, I still have mates near notts, I'll ask about for you if it would help?0
-
To Nottingham from Manchester, yes that would be very helpful, thank you0

kia rio ( 2006 - 2011) shape, not the brand new one,
not much of a looker, but goes well, and 50mpg plus, cheap to buy,
got one for the mrs last year, mrs does 60 miles a day, got it from the local dealer for £6000 , with 10k miles on the clock, hasnt missed a beat,
(i work with alot of kia's anyway) all the mechanics i work with say the 1.5 engine is the best kia made, and the cars never seem to have alot wrong with them,0 -
I'd definitely be looking for a diesel which will do at least 80mpg
And for that many miles, i'd want something comfortable to drive.
Also, if doing this much driving you will have to get the car serviced more often (which is more £££)
But as already said, block-booking a travelodge or premier inn or b+b etc is a good idea during the week if you can get good prices - or even getting a short-term letting on a flat or house - could be cheaper.0
