Options
Has anyone here tried PD3 Fuel Conditioner which is supposed to make your home heating oil go further by between 10% - 35%?

Just wondered if it really worked. Here's a link...

yep tried it twice over the past year and no idea if its made a blind bit of difference. I think boilerjuice should offer up some trial to ensure it works. I would be up for it as I have to use oil

These additives, magnets, etc come up time and again in this forum.

They are all a total scam. Variations on the snake oil scam of years ago.

Complete and utter waste of money.

In these day when everyone is trying to cut fuel consumption, do you not think that if anything could improve consumption by even 2% there would not be government backing, trials in Which etc.

:rotfl: You'd def make an oil saving by how much of that stuff you put in!!!
  • Hi Becca

I came across PD-3 last year and tried it for the first time in August. I am now on my 3rd bottle and have found a noticeable difference. PD-3 helps the oil to combust more efficiently and increases the thermal efficiency and heat exchange of the boiler. It enables you to reduce the boiler settings and still maintain your water and radiator temperatures. This is why you can achieve fairly good savings in your oil usage. The product also reduces emissions which is good for your carbon footprint.

If you want more info on how it works have a look at https://www.pddirect.co.uk/index.php

I like keefrto's idea of a trial, I could try and arrange this with the company as they are located in N. Ireland. If anyone is interested in being part of this send me your email address.

Carbon footprint reduced eh - now thats trendy.

How can you arrange a trial? Connections with the company?

This is a money saving site, not money making.

Using your connections with the company why not get it evaluated by Which or any reliable INDEPENDANT organisation? and publish verified results.

  • Hi Cardew

I believe the company that makes the product has had it extensively tested. Several universities in the UK have been envolved and also Ricardo Engineering Consultants who are an independant organisation.

Regarding your point on Government backing, as much as the Government say they would like to reduce fuel usage and emissions, they pay lip service to it. Think about the amount of tax they would lose if a product was able to save 2% or more. Oil companies would not like it either as they want to sell more oil not less!!

If you can send me your email address I will forward you an independant report from one of the Councils in N. Ireland who have saved 20% on oil usage in several of their leisure facilites.

No thanks I don't need a personal message, there is nothing you can't publish on this Forum.

I believe that your sole 2 posts on this forum are SPAM. This stuff, with similary stupid claims, has been marketed under lots of names, it gives double the savings if used with special magnets as well!!

As for the Government keeping it quiet - beyond belief.

So I am stating unequivocally that you cannot produce any authoritative proof about your claim. All you need to do is produce the evidence; if you can email it to me, you can publish the link on this website.

    Why not prove me wrong?

    P.S.
The only reason I have bothered to reply is that there is an outside chance that there might be someone gullible enough to believe your claims.
  • There was a lengthy discussion about this on fool.co.uk (http://boards.fool.co.uk/Message.asp?mid=10201753&sort=whole).

Karl Devlin (who coincidentally is the registered owner of a website called https://www.pddirect.co.uk - an online store selling both PD3 and PD5), very kindly gave samples of the product to a number of people on the fool board to try. The upshot was that people did not see the difference.

Looking at the patent for this product (http://v3.espacenet.com/textdes?DB=EPODOC&IDX=WO2004044101&F=0&QPN=WO2004044101&RPN=WO2004044101&DOC=deb46d24db964d08c37b32eab26c13e38a) it is just treated water. The water is treated to reduce the size of the molecules (vibrational water) so that it binds with the oil raising the smoke point... *allegedly* this improves combustion efficiency but there doesn't seem to be much truly independent research done on this.

I find it hard to believe that this really works, bearing in mind increasing fuel prices and the fact that oil is not going to be around forever, if it did I would expect that the Government would make this a compulsory fuel treatment that would be added at source.
  • Hi Cardew

I came on this forum to respond to Becca’s question about PD-3 Fuel Conditioner, and am conscious that you are claiming that my responses are spam. I have been open in terms of my name on this site and if I were to spam the product do you not think I would have registered on this forum with a completely different name to my own? The link was to allow Becca to form his/her own opinion on the product. If you read my first post on the Fool board you will see how I came across this product and the improvements I found, and that is the reason why I am endorsing it.

As regards to this product being sold under other names, I can assure you that is not the case. This product is the only aqueous based fuel product on the market. If you look at all the rest that are on the market they are toxic and hazardous and usually petroleum based. There is no other product like this available.

I offered to arrange product for a free trial which I could arrange with the manufacturer, and this offers still stands, for anyone who would like to take it up.

Cavalier posted that I had responses back from some people who received samples on the Fool board, who did not see improvements. I arranged for 10 bottles as samples for those who had requested one. This also included some bottles of PD-5 which is a product designed for use in petrol and diesel fuel. 2 people responded on the board, one did not see an improvement (using PD-3) and the other was neutral who was going to continue trialing it (using PD-5). There are others who did not want to respond on the board as they found most of the members were very negative and sarcastic about the whole thing.

I have posted the newspaper article, on the PD Direct website, from Ballymoney Council (in N. Ireland), who have been using the PD-3 product at the Joey Dunlop Leisure Centre, confirming independent test results of 20% saving on oil usage. The Council has now started to use it in other Council buildings. You can follow this link to the article.

I have also posted a link to a report on a trial carried out by Ricardo Engineers PLC on PD-5 Fuel Conditioner. This is also supplemented with test data from Cranfield University and Queens University Belfast. You can follow this link to the report.

I am sure this will be of interest to you.

    Kind regards

On a side note I puchased the magnet solution listed above for £3 last year. Can't be bad at that I thought.

Anyways, I cannot comment as to how it works or if it burns less fuel but as soon as I started using it the Rads where certainly hotter throughout the house. The boiler was already at it's lowest or i'd have been able to turn it down.

    Martin.
