Heh, I'm not the last now - I sowed them this morning - in a tray indoors as that's what it said on the packet for this time of year. I'm still very much at the going by what it says on the packet stage! It said you could sow them outdoors from April. I did that last year, but so many weeds came up with them that I didn't know which were the marigolds!

Think I'll go with sowing them indoors just to be on the safe side!

I'm just back from Aldi. I bought some small pots so I don't freak out my next lot of transplanted seedlings :D and a raspberry bush thing and a blackberry one too. £3 each, thought they were worth a go and they looked really healthy (to my untrained eye).

What do I do with them?:o

By that I mean should they stay indoors until it's past frost risk or can they go outside now?

I should think they can go outdoors. It's my (admittedly limited) understanding that anything that's going to *stay* outdoors permanently can *go* outdoors at any time, if you see what I mean? Thus, I was planting fruit trees and rose bushes in Jan and Feb etc.

As for what you do specifically for raspberries and blackberries, I'll leave someone else to answer that as I haven't done either of them!

Apple trees have arrived. Moved 2 bushes in front garden, just got another 3 to relocate and the trees can go in tomorrow. The grass seed has been bought for the back garden along with 180 bulbs and some mini daffs and foxglove and lupin plants. I will have a cottage garden this year. As soon as one of the apple trees is in my front raised border i can start planting my veg. Going to try and grow from seed as i have nowhere to grow seedling in the house so fingers crossed. Chooks will then be banned from dustbathing in the raised bed, given them a talking to. Also bought lavender plants to go down the side by the chicken run. Supposed to help with flies in summer. Told the chooks not to eat those either. Ever the optomist. So tomorrow is going to be a very busy day. Oh and i have had to treat myself to a new spade as OH was helping dig out shrubs and broke mine, tis a traditional spade with wood handle and gleaming stainless steel, tis a thing of beauty, sad, very sad i know.

Would it work if i planted ordinary strawberry plants in hanging baskets as i have loads of runners. If i can is it better to use soil or compost. Had loads of strawberrys last year. Chooks ate the lot before we managed to get them ripe enough for us to eat.

When I was out earlier I noticed a sign for a local nursery which was advertising maure for £1 as well as topsoil, not sure how much that was. Might be good for when we make our raised beds.

My delivery has just arrived so might pop back out and see if I can find the nursery in question.
  • Okay, so today I sowed indoors:
    French marigolds
Winter gem lettuces (second attempt as something at the first lot)
    Broccoli (calabrese)
    Tigerella tomatoes
    Spaghetti squash
    Courgettes
    Sweetcorn

    And in the greenhouse:
    Sprouting Lancer Broccoli
    Gardener's Delight tomatoes
    Spencer Waved mixed sweet peas

I also planted some primroses my Mum gave me for Mother's Day and did a *load* of weeding, so I now feel I can show you my cabbages and garlic (with a few winter pansies still going). :-)

And the chard from last autumn which is going mad again!

  • Meanwhile, on the windowsill I have:

    Bell peppers (2 rows)
    Aubergines
    Tomato Gardeners Delight
    Brussels Sprouts
Chrysanthemum Snowland (a freebie with an order)

The tomatoes and Brussels look like they need pricking out soon but I'm leaving them a bit till I can hopefully do them all at once.

Next along I have 6 types of nasturtium, bought to woo aphids off my veggies, which I'm really impressed with since I only sowed them 13 days ago!

    Garden005.jpg

And finally my first lot of leeks in their second home, and some basil, chives and coriander which again I only sowed 13 days ago:

  • Oh, and not strictly on topic, since they're not edible, but they're guaranteed to brighten up anyone's day and I'm proud to have actually planted bulbs that came up, here's my spring display!

    You're doing well there angelfeathers.

    Your seedlings look very healthy.

I'm having mixed success with my windowsill herbs but them some were bought for 10p at the end of last season!

Love the spring flowers. It's always so nice to see them this time of year, they hold the promise of better weather. I have some pots with mini daffs and crocuses (??=spelling) in which I planted in the autumn at my old flat and am so glad we brought them with us as they are so bright and pretty now.
