MBE, did you have your BNS yesterday?

I did indeed. Roasted up with other veg - kohl rabi, potatoes, courgette, carrots and parsnips, plus runner beans too. Made roasted vegetable soup today with the leftovers, plus courgette and mushroom bread to dunk in it. Very nice too.

I was surprised to find the squash was solid all the way through:

I'm guessing this means it was actually immature? Either way, it hadn't got any bigger for ages and it looked ready to me! It was very tasty roasted, and I've still got half left for something else.
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
  • Whipped this one out of the greenhouse today:

Not sure if it's blight or botrytis. I suspect botrytis due to the humidity in the greenhouse. Even with the doors wide open all summer, it's been that wet that something was bound to get a hold.

It looks like Botrytis aka Grey Mould which thrives in the current cool damp conditions.
My toms have suffered from it for the last couple of weeks, but I've managed to minimize its effect by removing infected foliage and friut, together with plenty ventilation.
Not really worth trying to treat it so late in season, just a case of trying to manage it while toms ripen.

Great looking bread, and no seeds just makes the squash easier to cook ;) add one of those tasty sweet peppers (chopped) you have to the half left after you've chopped it into chunks, 1 veg stock cube and 500mls ish of water, bring to the boil and simmer till squash is soft. Blitz in a blender (add more water if too thick for you) and eat. It's our favourite soup here. Freezes well too.

I agree with Badrick, at least it's at the end of the season.

My garden's all soggy again :( squelch as you walk on the grass. No root crops left in the ground so not too worried but it rained so hard over the last 48 hours it's flattened everything and let the snails get to the last few beans and peas.

That was my thought too. Nothing I could do but remove it from the greenhouse, as it's pretty much 100% humidity here at the moment, so it doesn't make much difference that the doors are wide open. I only got one ripe tomato from that plant. :(

Thanks Annie. The squash is perhaps the favourite thing I've grown this year. ;)

I'll try the soup and let you know how I get on. The bread recipe is here if you fancy a bash? Best thing I've found for those nasty ole courgettes. :p

  • my chutney is scrummy, btw. Needs to mature a bit, but is delish.
  • Well I wouldn't go quite that far, but yes, I have had things other than gardening to occupy my time of late. ;)
Been a funny old year hasn't it ?
So frustrating gardenwise yet so uplifting with the Jubilee and Olympics.
I look forward to helping you grow your dinner next year.

Courgettes aren't nasty you just have to find the right recipes :p

Hopefully you'll get more than one squash next year, well, that's on the assumption that we do have a summer next year, can't be worse than this one.............I hope!

    Courgettes are nasty unless well-disguised!

I think I might have a bash at a patty pan squash next year. I didn't really think I liked squash but seem to have been converted this year. :D
