My BNS has almost lost all it's green now, just need another couple of weeks, hope it stays frost free at night, although the low night time temps of 8c for here are a little worrying.
Mine's never really been green. How do I know when it's ready? It hasn't increased in size for about a month. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

Bad news! We set fire to our chimney last night. Firemen and everything. Spent today cleaning soot of everything. Gah.
You really don't have much luck, do you?
Can't wait for the chutney verdict though. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

No idea, never got this far before, slugs have always eaten the stems by now.

After having read the grapevine above, think I should have nipped off the shots after fruit set to help growth, but I didn't which may explain why they aren't very big.
Seems to be the longer you leave them the longer they store as the skin toughens, but I have no intention of storing mine, it's going straight in my tummy:D
I'm going to leave mine to see if they become a richer yellow like the ones in the 2nd link above.0 -
Looking at that I will have just one squash this year. I don't actually mind - I'm extremely pleased to have managed that!If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0

It was seeing what the guy in liverpool had grown that made me want to grow them.
Nice looking BNS, it's looks yellow like his. I'm impressed as I didn't get any last year, but this year I've got 2 small ones and a baby 3rd that I cant see growing or getting yellow in time. Both the other ones have a faint green tinge still to them, so I'll leave mine longer.
Your one was a BNS when mine was just starting to flower so I guess yours may be ready. The grapevine will know0 -

Nope - completely run out of that 'luck' thing of which you speak.
Chutney looks good. I'm going to crack open a jar this weekend to have with some local award winning cheese and a good bottle of port. I'll let you know!0 -
Sorry I have been missing for a while garden still doing fine had loads of green beans and new plants planted late are coming along nicely so worth doing will remember for next year. Put some potatoes in for Christmas but that is about it. About to empty my pots to get some winter colour in. Planning to plant up some large black bucket I have and put them on the empty vey pacth to make it look a bit more interesting in Winter.
Saw this and I really really would like a green house but have no space. I got so fed up with having my seedling by the sliding door this would be so much nice and I think it would look ok on the patio slabs it would be South facing though? Is that too hot?Cheapest I can find it is £179 (that's £20 off) guessing the are going cheap this time of year.

It sounds hollow when I tap it. So I reckon it's ready.
On Sunday I'm going to eat it with a nice roast dinner. :drool:If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -

It looks nice, but are you sure you haven't got space for a greenhouse? It would be so much more useful! You could get a 6'x6' from Norfolk Greenhouses for about that price. If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0 -
I've found out what's been damaging my spuds at last: bloody slugs!
And then it seems the worms move into the holes:
Horrible! Not happy because they're wrecking my crop.If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.0
