There's never been enough heat to make tomatoes go wilty this week - I'd say that was more from wind or lack of water personally....

Nope. They were sat in a sheltered corner on a raised bed with a plastic cover. The door to the cover was fully open but no wind got to them and they were in full sun. They had also been watered before going out.

I've been out in t-shirts recently, the sun was here all day yesterday and it was very warm.

I suspect because the porch they are used to is so cold, they are struggling with the heat of the sun. Our forecast is for more sun so they had better get used to it pronto.

My strawbs have been in the mini greenhouse all along but I think I'm going to have to put them outside now, they've grown too big and my toms are suffering for it! Do you think they'd survive or is it strawb suicide?

Strawberries are hardy - so get them out pronto. Save your mini greenhouse for something that needs it. Time to sow more seeds I reckon.

Do your greenhouse ones go limp MBE, from the heat/sun?

They might if we had any. I think the irony of my last post was lost somewhat. :p
If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

Absolutely, they've taken up a lot of space! They're in huge grow bags so will need to wait till the OH gets home to help me drag them out :rotfl:

    Clearly. :o:rotfl:

We've had loads of sun recently and the area of garden where my raised beds are, is a proper sun trap.

Looks like we've had better weather than you then.

    Ok, another question.

I got a garden thermometer and sat it on one of the raised beds (with the cover, door down but unzipped and flapping). It's measuring 24.3 degrees and that one is now in the shade, so I dread to think how hot the ones in the sun are. There's no wind.

Now my thinking is, this is only going to get worse as the days pass (i.e hotter) so am I better just chucking them out now before the temperature rises even more? They may go a bit limp now but if I wait any longer, it'll be even hotter so they'll be even more likely to pop their clogs.

It really is very warm in the back garden in the sun, I keep having to come in 'cos I'm getting a headache.

I've got three transferred to 3 individual buckets and was going to leave them outside from now on in their little growhouse home. The rest are to get planted in the raised beds. So....do I put them all out now or later? :undecided

I've had a look at the weather sites and they differ quite a lot but the general consensus is the lowest temp should be around 4 or 5 and even then that's only for one night, the rest of the time it's around 7/8/9.

Edit: Got yet another question....been having a look on the net to see if I can see how shallow a pot I can get away with for my pea plants. I found a site that says they are a 'medium rooting' plant and require a depth of 18"-24". That seems very deep to me. It also says tomatoes are a 'deep rooting' plant, but if that's so then how come you can grow tomatoes in growbags?

My pea plants are still in 3" pots at the minute and they have pods.

    *confused*

I've had some toms out for about 3 weeks now, under an upturned plastic container - and others that went out last week under a net. All are fine. Even the tester that went out near the ones under the container is still alive.

I don't garden that far up north but only you can make that decision. I've planting my toms out [I'm growing lots of dwarf ones in any spare spaces] as of today with no protection. However, I do have loads there to take their place if they do badly.
If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.
