I know this will go against their ethos - Aldi need to get self scans. I don't buy much as I live alone and normally walk home with shopping.

Most times, a customer with a full trolley lets me go in front of them.

I will often do this as I usually have so much to unload it is easier to let people with a few items go first.

Ha ha!! This thread has had me laughing!! My neighbour is an Aldi snob, in fact she will step into a Sainsbury's, just about, (as I will explain later!), but she only shops in Waitrose..... A year or two ago when we had all the bad weather, snow etc, she asked me for a lift as she wanted to get some shopping, our nearest - and small - supermarket is Sainsbury's, with Lidl and Aldi a couple of miles more. As it was bad weather I wanted to go to the nearest one so I took her there. When I met her back at the car she said 'oooh I had to ask someone how to work the trolley'!!!! Of course, at Waitrose you don't need to put a coin in to release a trolley lol!!!

Once we were talking about supermarkets and which ones we liked etc, she completely dismissed Aldi etc, (as if they were the devil himself!!!), she LOVES Waitrose and Sainsbury's is 'ok'. I have grown to love Aldi more and more, lovely ranges of food, I have my definite 'staples' now of both favourites and stuff I just want to save money on. I can do around 3/4 of my shop there, when I am in town once a week, the rest of the time I go to Morrisons, (our nearest big supermarket the other way from Aldi - it's complicated!!!), or our local veg shop and Sainsbury's. Sometimes I refuse to buy stuff in Morrisons, Sainsbury's etc because I see the prices of some things and I think NO WAY am I paying that!!!! and get it in Aldi later on.
  • Aldi carrier bags rock
  • I love Aldi, but I did take a bit of converting as I used to thinkt hat the stuff might be horrible because I hadn't heard of the brand. I gave it a try after reading the reviews on here and am now a complete convert - I love it! My kids won't use the carrier bags though and go made if I come in with loads of Aldi bags in case their friends in the street see! I also shop in lidl but am not as keen on their range of stuff.

I think with both Aldi and Lidl that it depends on the individual manager as to what the store itself is like. In the Aldi near me the shop is spotlessly clean and the aisles are well stocked and tidy. I have never had to queue even though the shop is busy. However in the aldi near my sister's the shop looks grimy and the aisles are disorganised and the shop itself has a weird smell, plus they only EVER have one checkout open and you always have to queue for ages. Mind you, when I think about that is the case with any supermarket!

My best friend was a total Aldi snob, until her circumstances meant that she had to reign in her spending. She still won't go to the local aldi, but goes to the one about 4 miles away and loves it!!

I go to other supermarkets too but there are definitely bargains to be had in Ald!. I will be going this week with £5 off voucher in Thursday's mirror. I need all the savings I can get.

Some people care what others will think of them.. Pathetic!

Let's shop at ALDI & LIDL, if it saves me money in some sectors then why not?

I'd love to have an Aldi or Lidl near me. Unfortunately I'm in west london and we only have Waitrose, M&S and Sainsburys - even Tesco and Morrissons are a bit too far away - if they were nearer I might pop into Morrissons (wouldn't bother with Tesco).

Problem is, there is no one ideal supermarket. Sainsburys is best of my three for veg; Waitrose meat is quality; M&S for processed foods. But I would like somewhere cheap'n cheerful.

I love Aldi and Lidl. These days it is a bit far to go to Lidl in the car as my nearest is 8 miles away, however, there is a new Aldi which I can walk to (or I can take the car). My local Aldi is spotless, the staff are lovely and are not sitting filing their nails when there is nothing to do - they are up and stacking shelves and tidying up. If there is a queue then they will open another till - unlike my local Sainsbugs or Tatco.

I have converted my mum to Aldi as well and now she buys all her fruit & veg (because they are fresher and cheaper than her local Asda and they last longer). She buys ice cream, tinned fruit (she loves their tinned peach slices), frozen chicken breasts. I was at my parents' place for dinner yesterday and instead of the usual steamed pud that my mum usually makes she served up some apple strudel which she managed to cut in half so half remains in the freezer. I commented on how nice it was and she said 'Aldi'.

I went to Tatco before Christmas and bought a bag of oranges - 4 in bag for £1, then Christmas week I went to Aldi and bought a bag of oranges 6 in bag for £1, I was in Aldi last week and picked up a bag of oranges - 6 in bag now for sale for 69p. I had some Benefit Red Fruits cereal which tastes just like Special K only far cheaper, a bag of boneless, skinless chicken breasts (I use them if I want to cook up some meat to go in sandwiches, if I fancy a roast or if I want to make a stew).

I have visited Lidl when I have been abroad and the some of the food is the same as in the UK but they also have a travel agent so you can book your holidays. I cannot understand the snobbery unless it is down to the pile 'em high with food still in boxes instead of having a pile of tins on the shelf. Both Lidl and Aldi are in fact quite posh shops - certainly so in Europe.

My computer desk is a Lidl special as is my blanket box (which I built myself - am quite pleased with that because until that day I hadn't wielded a screwdriver before). I have had coats, ski wear, and other stuff from Lidl or Aldi.

I am on a really tight budget since becoming unemployed (recession hit my business) and would recommend Aldi and/or Lidl as places to buy good food at an economical price.
