I received my bill yesterday and noticed the £4.46 one off charge. When I rang to query it I was told that I had been notified by post. I asked for the date on which the letter had been sent, and after a couple of minutes on hold was told that a letter hadn't been sent after all. He then agreed to refund the charge on this occasion.
Well done - but it's easier just to make the necessary 6 calls in the quarter - they'll only cost you a total of 33p (27p from 1/8/07) if each is an evening or weekend 01 or 02 call of less than an hour!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Oh Caller Display... I cancelled Caller Display (I was paying for it) and then the following month I read about BT Privacy and enabled that expecting I would get Caller Display again. BT tells me I should be receiving it but I neither get it when I use the CD box (they said I could keep it bless them), or if I use my Caller Display handsets. When I test which services are on my line, it tells me I have Call Diversion enabled. BT says I don't!

At least registering with the TPS as part of when I enabled Privacy has stopped 99% of nuisance calls!

And as well as telling me to keep the CD box, I stopped renting the phone and they didn't want that back either - it came in useful when youths damaged a cable the other week and we lost power in our area since our cordless phones were out of use.

Try unsubscribing from the free caller display service via the Manage Calling Features link and rejoin in 3/4 days and see if that works..

On the one BT line I have free caller display, Caller Display isn't mentioned when I test what services are on the line..

    Regards

  • I have been paying for caller display for years. I now find out that if you sign up to a free service called something like BT Home Privacy, this comes as standard.... Free!
(Sorry if this is old news!)

BT introduced free Caller Display on 1/7/2005 but, in 2006, announced that it 'reserved the right' to charge those who didn't make 'some' calls via BT for it.

They have now been more specific about what 'some' means and it is defined as '6 chargeable calls in a quarter (or 2 in a month for those billed monthly).'

    That means it's now 'almost free' - six evening or weekend calls of less than an hour to a UK 01/02 number @ 5½p each = 33p (6 x 4½p = 27p from 1/8/07).

As Heinz points out if you make six evening or weekend calls via BT 1280 of less than an hour to a UK 01/02 number @ 5½p each it will cost you 33p a quarter. Just 11p a month.

Just discovered that if you place order for 'PRIVACY AT HOME' which is FREE you have caller display.

I don't understand that if you request 'caller display' you pay £1.75 a month but 'BT PRIVACY AT HOME' option is free! I placed order online and within minutes it was working!:D Every time my phone rings now the name of the person or number appears. Yesterday 'INTERNATIONAL' appeared and I thought oh perhaps it's a call from India, but no it was a call from my sister who was on holiday, but it is very handy!;)

Its been free for some considerable time now. But recently BT started charging if you dont make 2 chargeable calls a month through them.

BT have some gall to charge for Caller Display, it generates more income in returned calls than it costs I'm sure. Standard 1471 only gives you the last number who rang you, whereas with a good Caller ID phone you get 10 or 20 call records.

Just try being on VM, its appalling. If the call goes to voicemail (after 6-7 rings) it doesn't even record the number at all.
