I would never buy meat in Asda their meat is often rancid before its supposed sell by date, two possible reasons for this, poor housekeeping in storage or repackaging.

I worked at an Asda store for many years on the night shift re-stocking the shelves. it was quite a regular occurance to see rats running about outside at the back of the store, quite a lot of stock was stored outside under canopies including crisps. the staff were required to go out to pick the stock themselves and we used to refuse to go out and do it. The milk was delivered about 5 am and quite often it was still sitting outside in the yard at 6am we we finished our shift and that could be in the summer or winter. There were regularly birds flying around in the warehouse, I admit they did do something about that and called the pest control people in. It must happen everywhere after all these warehouses are open to the outside and the wildlife are bound to come in for shelter from the cold, and there is always food around.

Well, yes it certainly doesn't make pleasant viewing... but humanity has survived fairly well without refrigeration for about 4000 years.
So what I don't know won't kill me. Common sense, using your eyes and nose when preparing food is still the best defense.
Just remember that it is often the measures you take in your kitchen that will makethe most difference.

  • just finshed watch the programme....

i felt soooo sorry for those dairy farmers.......

and the guy with the lettuce......at a drop of a hat.. after 26 years of supplying somerfield..

just goes to show... how powerfull supermarkets are......
they even had to pay the supermarket to sell their product........i know this happened with big brands paying for prime position onh the shelves etc..... but small suppliers on fresh produce....

really making me try to stick to my challenge of not shopping at supermarkets....( as little as possible anyway)

i wonder what they will be covering on tomorrow's programme...

I now feel even stronger about supporting the smaller retailers round here :( After seeing the dairy farmer I am going to go hunting for a milkman... there HAS to be one round here who will deliver to me!

  • I felt really gutted for the farmers in the prog today and also felt like shouting out to the pesto lady, to start selling her stuff via mail order, farmers markets and shows etc rather than sainsbury. Riverford formation was a direct result of shabby treatment by sainsbury.

My dd stopped using the supermarkets five months ago and I have stopped using them for groceries and fresh produce and I have to say that my purse now has more money in it because of not being tempted by the subliminal stuff that goes on

These are my main internet links for food and groceries. I use them because they are tried and tested and they sell organic, apart from martins seafresh. I have used them for years and have never been let down

I get milk from riverford and top up with moo organic but I`ll try extra milk from riverford this week and see if it lasts. I`ll also be looking into the cheese from riverford or craigfarm

Please if you can shop locally and buy produce from your small greengrocers, butchers and farm shops. I used to always go to Sainsburys but I got to the point that my fruit and Veg never lasted more that a couple of days, I wasted so much because it had gone off. I now have a local farmer deliver 1 box of organic veg and 1 box of organic fruit every 2 weeks and if kept in the garage and not washed it lasts for 2 weeks easily. It is cheaper for me as none of it goes to waste and tastes wonderful in comparison. I also buy organic meat and eggs. If you can support our farmers and local tradesmen. !
  • paige the ideal would be for me to shop locally but it is impossible where I live. The shops nearest (1.5 miles) cater for the masses (so they think!) and sell fatty pasties, grotty veg, mass produced rubber bread and so on. The internet suppliers I use are the equivalent of shopping locally for me

If only the great majority of people knew how much they would save by avoiding the big supermarkets.

I wish I could use our local small convienence store which is locally owned however I've found them the worst offenders. The floors are filthy, they peel best before labels off food which has passed it's date and the other week I couldn't believe it when I went to the till and they had packets of cooked ham sitting on the counter (unrefridgerated), packets all blown because it was going off, with the day before's sell by date on them, selling them at a reduced price, and to add insult to injury they'd only knocked 20p off them. Although to be fair, I'd have little sympathy for anyone stupid enough to buy them.
