To stop bugs freeze the rice when you get it, thaw it when frozen, the freeze once more. The first freeze puts beasties into hibernation, thawing mimics spring so they wake up, refreezing kills them off. I learnt it from one of the OS threads on here.

Oh, I also have another question....do you ever pay back the monthly/weekly £10 (or whatever) to your 1st purse/grocery budget? So you only keep the savings in 2nd purse. Or do you take that almost as a bit of pocket money?

    Thanks x

No you don't pay the 1st Purse back, what happens when you go for your weekly shop is as your store grows, you buy less on your weekly shop. If you have tea bags , coffee , toilet rolls etc you wont need to buy them and pay full price in the SM, any profit ends up in your purses not the SM's.

At the moment my store is full, so are my freezers, so I don't need to buy anything other than perishables, I've got that to around £10 per week. + any offers I'm running low on.
Then I pay back the purse for what I'm using and add my £10 at the end of the month (pay day). It doesn't go much over £100.

For the first year if you can build your stock. You will notice a big difference in what you need to spend on your weekly shop.

If you can wait till the profits reach the 3rd purse, you could then use that for things you want. You don't need to pay the 3rd Purse back thats your reward for all your hard work. I use that for all manner of things, this past year I used it to stock up my freezers with DR meat as well as treats for the family.

Before I joined MSE I only ever bought groceries etc, now I spend about 10% of the 3rd Purses profits on Grabbit's, books, presents, toys, Boot's purchases and about 15% of it topping up the freezers. 10% on Ebay purchases. The rest I use for things I need or want.
Last Year I bought a steam cleaner and a pressure washer. The year before one of those generator irons. All things I couldn't afford to buy from my budget if I shopped on a weekly basis.

All I can say is it's worked for me, that and frequenting this site has taught me a thing or two about money saving.

I've never spent so little and got so much. And best of all its been great fun, and I've virtually met loads of like minded people, all good eh?

Oooh can I join please :) i *think* i understand how it works now...but (not sure if this has been asked not read all posts yet ) the first purse is your grocery budget purse? Your second purse is the money saved for offers? And when you take something from your store, you take the money from the first, and put it into the second? But where does the third purse come in :o Ok i didn't really understand.....i'm gonna go read all the posts now in case i missed it :o

I'd like to save up for a new tall freezer which is around £200.

And another question. I've already started stock piling on cheap bargains (one of my resolutions for the new year) so can I use that already ?

Sorry some really stupid questions :o

ETA: I have now read all the links you put up kerri and totally understand (hopefully) lol

I might try and put more than £10 in every month though if i can and take that from the grocery budget :)

1st Purse your grocery budget... you pay £10 or what you can afford every month to the 2nd Purse to pay for stock for your shop + you pay for anything you use. The more you can spare to start with the quicker you will start saving.

Yes use what stock you have to get you started, set a price for each item.

I transfer anything over £100 in the 2nd Purse to the 3rd Purse. You can set your limit at whatever you like, If you can leave as much as you can in it for stock purchases, at least for the first 6-12 months, obviously the more you buy from yourself the more money will be in your purse, and the money will reach the 3rd purse quicker.

Just one thing to watch don't bulk buy sweets, crisps biscuits etc...
They will get eaten LOL and you will carry them around with you FOREVER!

    Hello

    Can I join too?

I'm doing the January Grocery Challenge, and have 'got my head around' Mothership's 2nd Purse now.....I'm going to put £10 a week in until I build up my stock a little (and would love to see the list of what you stockpile please Mothership) and then I may drop it to £5 a week, depending on how it goes.

I'm saving for a freezer too, a small under the counter one is all i have room for so I guess £150 should be ample.

So far have stockpiled tissues, toilet rolls, dishwasher tablets and plenty of the Heinz soups and Napolina chopped tomatoes that are on offer at A$da for 50p per tin at the moment.....I don't know how long the offer is on for though. In the last couple of weeks it was just a few varieties of soups, but today it was all of them, so have bought lots a 50p and have put a re-sell value of 85p when I 'buy' them back.

Thanks to Kerri for starting this thread.

I've just placed 3 separate orders from Donald Russell online Butchers, for delivery on May, June, July.

Delivery is normally free only with purchases over £80 but every now and then they offer free delivery on all purchases.

The mince is superb and great value at this price. I find a lot of their meat etc, terribly expensive so I can only buy it when there's an offer on.
I like to spread the orders out over several months, 1 of the pheasants the pork pot roast and Tafelspitz will be used when they are delivered, and were bought as 'Treats' from the 3rd purse.

The remaining Pheasant and mince will top up my freezer, the mince was purchased from the 2nd Purse. If you charge yourself full price for this thats £22 for your 2nd purse. This was one of the first items I bought from DR and I don't buy any other mince now.

If you want to try DR, with the free delivery, you will need to do it soon as they change it all the time. If you want to place separate orders you will have to quit the page and return for each separate order.
