I wouldn't be so worried about the fuel usage for restarting as I would the resale value.

When that car is 10 years old and prone to head gasket failures and other things that affect its starting ability, who will want a car that intentionally turns off its own ignition and then becomes a pain to restart?

    I certainly wouldn't.

A manual start is no different to a normal car, so if the auto start failed to work then simply start it manually.

So go and find yourself an old Ford Anglia. ....its about as basic as you can get and still have lights and indicators.

Why do you want indicators? there is a perfectly good system of arm signals for the modern motorist to use.

All you have to do if you are paranoid in nature and have an aversion to keeping your car maintained properly is simply press the "off" button.

I think the system is brillaint.
Since I had my car in Sept 2009, the computer reckons I've used eco mode for 14 hours 30ish minutes since this morning - thats a lot of fuel saved imo
I'd imagine its a much simpler system on a petrol car than a diesel - didn't even know stop start was available on diesels until this thread.

You're missing the point. Supposing the vehicle has a defect which prevents it from actually starting? - automatic or manual it still won't start.

Supposing you've got a headgasket failure and coolant is leaking into the cylinders - petrol won't burn. How does starting manually make any difference to an auto start?

    It won't.

Not missing the point but you seem to think that having auto start/stop is going to make such an occurance more likely. If not, then what was your point?

One of our cars has it and I would definitely want it on our next car - until we bought it I didn't realise just how much time is spent stationary - we really notice now because the engine cuts out.

We save on fuel and it means the road tax is cheaper - when we come to sell the car at 3 years old we should get a good price as the type of car keeps their value really well as they are considered cheap to run (buyers look at the cost of the tax and the economy without perhaps considering other costs). I don't really care about the value when 10 years old!

    Read my original post.

My point was that once it gets to an age where it becomes difficult to start, auto stop/start would become more of a hinderance than a help.

Yeah but at 10 years old once they start showing problems you will because it will restrict your choice of new cars to buy and sell on as it ages.

An example is Renault. They don't hold their values very well because everyone knows the older it gets the more trouble it'll be. Therefore how many people are going to buy a brand new renault knowing how much it will depreciate?

IF you have more money than sense then perhaps that doesn't matter to you but most folks in the real world want to resell for as much as possible.
