we really like aldi but have never seen the fascination with lidl. We went once with my fiance's mom and we chucked half the food away because it was horrible.

Chips (Tasted vile and i like 95% of chips), Quiche (tasted like egg , no cheese taste) , Microwave burger (i think i chucked half of it away - cheese was white , i know those burgers look quite light at the rest of the time but it was very light. and just a horrible taste) , pizza (no taste).
I think there was more but it was quite awhile ago.

Aldi on the other hand i can praise most products , there versions of the horrible lidl stuff taste nice. Plus i looooooove their sausage rolls , probably my fave sausage rolls i have ever tasted. Love the two pizzas in a box , yoghurts , most buscuits & the popcorn. The coke is the best value there is , they put it back down to 39p , when a coke is £2+ i mean wow. Most of the stuff is good.

Personal taste I suppose. I only shop in Lidl - did a big shop in there yesterday and spent £60 - that's the most I've ever spent in there in one go! The couple of times I've been in Aldi I wasn't overly impressed with the quality and I actually thought them more expensive than Lidl too. But as I say, it comes down to personal taste and preference in the end and I've no doubt there are plenty that would disagree with me.

This thread is great, but personally I wish we could have separate ones for Aldi and Lidl as this one is very much Aldi dominated I find (no criticism intended, it's just the way it balances out) and as I said I'm a committed Lidl man! :)

I love the fact that the thread is still so popular - and that it still exists at all!

'Good and bad buys from Aldi and Lidl' still suggests that the food they sell is in some way different from the food sold by Tesco and the major supermarkets. Or inferior in some way. There aren't, so far as I know, any similar threads for Tesco/Waitrose/Sainsbury/Morrison etc.

The food's no different, it comes from the same suppliers most of the time, but the perception that it's in some way 'different' still seems to linger.

Only the prices are different! :)

I think it's because apart from own brands, all the other supermarkets sell exactly the same brands? The food is different in for many, they are unknown brands?
I personally think there is a difference between brands and if they are made in same place it can be to a different spec and price.

Lidl seems to be changing a lot of late.

The shops and their weekly brochures are increasingly being filled with their fairly pricey deluxe range.

In one way I guess it could be quite good. They have some very unusual stuff in the range, though they do appear to be killing off half the animal kingdom with some of their more "exotic" meats.

Personally, I've just been driven even more to my local Aldi which is giving me exactly what I want and is amazing VFM. Lidl seems to be getting more aimed at the middle classes. As I say, perhaps that's a good thing - a niche shop for niche treat items. But, generally, it's increasingly become a shop I visit less and less whereas I seem to pop into Aldi more and more as I keep discovering lovely food that is gradually replacing all the stuff I used to buy the branded version of in Tesco, Sains, etc.

You are right - there are differences. Some of them are so obvious that they can be seen on the ingredients lists.

It's just an urban myth that products made in the same factory have to be identical. Sometimes they are - often they are not.

The Fairtrade coffee is a success! :j

Bought lots of goodies tonight. Lots we've already tried along with lots of new ones. Spent almost £120  :o

Would have cost me substantially more in other supermarkets though ;)

Huge thumbs up from my puddy cat for Aldi's VitaCat Healthy Balance complete diet which at £2.65 per kg is just a third of the price of her current dry food (Purina Pro Plan) and when comparing composition and nutritional content they are almost exactly the same! :T
