I really don't know why people try to defend Aldi by attacking Tesco. If this was an 'I think Tesco is ghastly' thread, I would be in there with you. But the degree of tribal loyalty being shown to Aldi beggars belief.
I love them both equally. They both serve a purpose.

After living my entire life in a town which had all the supermarkets mentioned in this thread, I;ve recently moved to a town that only has Waitrose and Sainsburys. They actually had a campaign here to stop Tesco building a store here.

Thankfully, there's a Tesco Express on the way home from work, but I need to drive a 10+ miles to the nearest Lidl, Aldi, Matalan, Asda, etc... I threw Matalan into the mix there because I buy nearly all my household stuff, towels, OH's clothes etc there.

My OH has lived in a few countries and declares Lidl as his spiritual home :D He always crosses himself when we drive past one. The closest supermarket to his mum's place in Greece is the poshest Lidl I've ever seen. Oh also lived in Zurich for a few years and his nearest supermarket there was :Lidl also.

When I go to Austria, I always dump my bags and head straight to the nearest Aldi for supplies, particularly vodka, juice and milk.

I bought a bar today: it is delicious and I just could not stop eating it. I am now addicted and will have to get some more. I hate you for this...

Sorry :o But it's sooooo good. Everytime you look at your growing hips, just think to yourself - "It was worth it, wasn't it?" :rotfl:

OH bought me another bar as I made such satisfied noises when eating it apparently...

What is wrong with it? I have just bought 2 of these today...........

It smelt awful as you lifted it to the mouth and had a real chemical smell and taste to it. Nothing like egg friend rice should be.

I tried the haggis that was on as an Aldi Specialbuy for Burns Night, there are probably some still available. Really tasty, quite peppery and spicy and very quick to prepare in the micro.

I've switched from using Paxo to using Aldi's Quixo stuffing; I'm hard pushed to tell the difference, other than Quixo being about 35p for a pack.

One thing that does surprise me about this thread is how many people prefer Aldi to Lidl! Just goes to show it all comes down to personal preference but definitely the other way round for me. I admit I first started shopping there through necessity due to a downturn in my fortunes but soon wondered why I hadn't done it sooner.

My top Lidl faves in no particular order:

    * Jars of curry cook-in sauces

    * Big jars of large pickled gherkins (I get thorugh a lot of these)

    * Frozen roast potatoes in goose fat

    * Triple layer boxes of Tenery cheese spread triangles (not the low fat one), every bit as good as Laughing Cow

    * Vacuum packed cooked ham joints, good value compared to ready sliced though I've started cooking my own gammon joints now which is even cheaper

    * Moist toilet wipes (sorry if that's TMI)

    * Cien shower gel, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner

    * Formil liquid detergent

And a lot more. Also, if you like cider, I heartily recommend the Woodgate Dry Cider. It's made for them by one of the big cider producers and has won awards

True - probably because Aldi has gone out of its way to woo the middle classes, the chatterati, the Guardian readers and the Waitrose customers.

And the £5 off Mirror vouchers cover everyone else! :D

I've seen other people say they worry about that but can only say I've used them for years (Kleenex and Andrex ones prior to the Lidl brand) and never had a single problem with them.

I sometimes wonder if the blockage stories arise from some people trying to flush baby wipes. They're not designed to break up in water whereas the toilet wipes are
