May I make a suggestion
Jaguar x type. I had an 09 sovereign 2.2 d estate. All the toys you need, based (!) on a mondeo so reliable and cheap to run / maintain but a stylish Jag body. Reasonable performance/economy/emissions. 2/3 year old models at lowish mileage for around the OP budget.
Only swapped it for an XF 'cos I missed the V6 diesil of my previous car.0 -
The chrysler mentioned a few posts up is an excellent shout. Ok, its no S class inside, and it makes my old Lanos feel like an elise in the corners, but I think it looks immense on the roads - esp the v8, that would be my choice. Its almost good enough to make me consider buying a diesel. Almost.
And TrickyWicky, at first I thought you were being serious about the octavia, but now I can see you were just trolling. That car you posted looks a right chav mobile, I bet it comes complete with 'hillarious' bumber stickers, and exhaust that sounds like an angry bee in a tin can too.0 -

What?
Sure it ain't the greatest pic but it was the first one I could find of the 2004/2002 model.
If you'd ever seen it you would of been saying something totally different.0 -

This is what it looked like:
That has the 1.8 turbo engine (180bhp) from the mark 1 Audi TT.
Trust me it is NOT a twin turbo:rotfl:0 -
Hi Folks, it would appear that considering these rather large engined car options then I might stick to my 4 year old 39K mileaged Signum, as other than perhaps my desire to avoid the really hard ride on 18" low profile tyres, I am not going to benefit much with tax and mpg with the useful, and appreciated, suggestions. An estimated £20K depreciation factor is already in my pocket and this, and the potential outlay for a replacement, will go quite a long way towards fuel, insurance and tyres with my reasonable annual mileage. As a 'belt and braces' precaution I pay £350 for extended warranty which pretty well covers everything other than usual brake etc wear and tears. This does not mean I am not open to suggestions - hence the original enquiry and appreciate the ideas above - thanks.0

Any ford model at ghia spec level. Have xenons, leccy seats etc. Just bought on 55 plate estate 100k ex doctor wagon for £1600
Mazda mps. Rapid. Reliable. Surreal spec Bose xenons etc. Not auto though.
Renaults seem to be good for spec A Mate had a modus auo with leather xenons and the rest it was really quite nice!0 -
if your still looking have a look at the mk4 and above ford mondeo's. loads of trim options to look at with the titanium x been at the top end with a fair amount of kit for the price. the newer mondeos are a massive step up from the older ones and the 2.0 diesel engines are pretty solid as well. the manual engines give about 53 mpg and auto i think is 40mpg0

I forgot all about this thread but now its been dragged up again..
I spoke to my neighbour and he has confirmed it was a TWIN TURBO. I have it from the horses mouth so there is now little point trying to convince me otherwise.0 -

Yeah but in a few years it'll be dead! Renaults do have a lot of cool stuff inside the car but their mechanical and engine electronic reliability is so questionable.
Then you have the parts and manuals. Renault dealers don't keep service manuals longer than 10 years just to make your life even harder when its of an age where it may need serious help. On top of that their service costs are £Mega. Then you have the parts issue - they only make the parts for 10 years and once they stop if its no longer available you're stumped - unlike VW who still make beetle parts now! You can ring up Renault to ask how to deal with the missing part and they'll just ring your local dealer and make a complaint against the parts department for not supplying the customer a part that they themselves don't make available.0
