  • Well according to the Postcode checker I should be upgraded in October........2013!
Looks like as I live in the small town of London it will take time for them to reach me in the sticks(!)

July onwards for me but hubby says he is ditching the contract by then... something to do with having to pay line rental twice (i switched off so i dont know what he was complaining about).

So by April i think i will be on dial up.

  • April for us, yay! Currently on 20Mb, so will appreciate the free upgrade to 60Mb.

This might be a silly question, but after years as a broadband and ADSL customer, cable is still dark arts and magic for me - we've currently got a cable modem, plugged into a netgear wireless router. If (as I suspect) the modem can't handle the new speeds, is it possible to get a combined modem/router? When I lived elsewhere and had ADSL I had one modem/router that handled everything, and would much rather have a similar set-up again.
  • This has got to be the biggest marketing campaign for VM in a while which is pointless

To acheive 60Mb from 20MB you will nee to supply their crap superhubs to all customers which is going to mean another set so there got to be costs somewhere because all routers and hubs unless you have the 50MB hub already wont support the traffic.

    Be very carefull people

Im shocked that the uk average on ADSL lines is so low.
Christ I use a 3mobile MiFi device for my internet access and
get speeds of just shy of 11mbs all day every day.

How is it right that a mobile connection can be better than an
ADSL based service? it just goes to show how underdeveloped
our services are in this country.

I seriously doubt that - try a speed test - http://www.speedtest.net/index.php What you are probably seeing is the WiFi connection speed and if so it's actually very slow. I use a MiFi anf see 54Mbps as the connection speed - even so sitting 200m from a cell I rarely see a 4Mbps true download speed.

It's true that 20Mbps customers will need a Superhub to get 60Mbps and VM have already said they'll provide one. The vast majority are on 10Mbps and you normally needed no modem change to upgrade to 20Mbps. It's only because 20Mbps is not a current product so you can only upgrade to 30Mbps right now that a new modem is needed.

It still doesn't alter the fact that there are lots of areas which are oversubscribed and deliver an abysmal connection offering far lower than advertised speeds an very high jitter and packet loss. They should have fixed that before rolling out a pointless and expensive upgrade as a knee jerk reaction to the rollout of that far better FTTC technology which can't offer the same headline speeds but doesn't suffer from localised overload if you happen to live in the same street as a torrent freak or two.

I suspect that VM are hoping they will get more 20Mbps to 60Mbps upgrades than they currently see going from 10Mbps to 30Mbps.

My old cable modem on my 10Mb service died last week. VM engineer came out and replaced it with a SuperHub at no cost to me. He said I'll then get upgraded to 30Mb rather than 20 as I now have the equipment to use it. Not really bothered, as 10Mb is fine for my needs. Does mean I've now got N class Wifi, instead of the G class I had through my own router though. :)

    Here you go dear :p

I believe im in an area that they have upgraded to their HSDPA+ although
im in the depths of Cornwall, near Penzance :D

Nearest mast is about a mile away by road, maybe 2/3 mile as the crow flies,
im at TR18 5N# and the mast is near buryas bridge (site TR0081) and the
    other in Alverton (site TR0006)

Oh and I use the newest MiFi E586, used to get about 3-4mbs on the older E585

Are there any deals for exsiting customers, have the 10mb deal but I'm thinking of upgrading to the 30mb deal to get the super hub.

    Cheers

    Paul
