I find it quite odd, the abject rejection of the thought of an electric car being used on the roads. Why are so many people so dead against them?
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

I'm not against them but I've just ordered a new car and did do some maths on electric cars and there's no way it works out for me.

I do spend £80 a week on petrol. I drive a £20k+ car and get 32.5mpg our of my car. Under warranty with free servicing, I just need to buy consumables. Buying a electric car would work out at about the same price per month and that was with a rental based on 6000 miles - I do over 15k so presumably they'll put the price up for extra wear and tear on the battery and car.

And, they are smaller than the car I need, I'd have to charge up during the day just to do my daily commute, let alone go shopping. For a long journey, I'd have to use H's gas guzzler which increases cost.

It's not free, it's blooming expensive. To save money, I just need a car that's better on normal fuel to the gallon - which is what I'm doing. When I lived in London, I did about 2000 miles a year, there's no way it would be economical. If you want economical in the city, you'd buy a C1 or something else that avoids congestion charge. And you'd buy outright.

It's simple at the moment - if you want an electric car to work out financially, you need to be doing a lot of miles. Fact is, the car can't cope with high miles.

I will consider an electric car when it makes sense financially.

I am not sure if mileage is the necessary the factor, but more the amount of fuel one uses and its cost. If a driver spends his day driving around London, he could use more than a tank a week, but still drive very few miles.

Of course these cars aren't suitable for high-milers, they're as unsuitable as a 15mpg car would be, or a campervan as a runaround!
I did say that it would be suitable as a second car, so there would be no 8 hr delays waiting for it to charge.
And yes, as above, if you use your imagination a little, you can say that the car charged from wind turbines. Not too many people will be able to say that though if these cars are popular!

There is apparently a quick charge option that takes only half an hour.

The % difference in mpg that you get urban and extra-urban in the same car is what, 20%? So if I do 15,000 miles extra-urban presently, I'd still need to be doing 12,000 miles in town, which would take forever. And the electric car is still not economical at that either.

It's a lovely idea, but it's a very expensive lovely idea for something that is getting closer, but still not meeting the needs of people to whom fuel economy makes the most difference - the real market place.

How the heck you work it out as free, I have no idea.

That very much depends on the car.

    Not really that expensive.

Then I think you need to re-read the title and the OP.

And just how many people are likely to drive their car around London all day on a regular basis every week?
